THE BRITISI MERCANTILE
MARINE.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE “HONGKONG DAILY PRESS."]
the question. It is not loss of life in sanguni- ary conflict which we need consider in the first pines, for we are confronted by the indisputable foot that with our merchant ships cut of either wholly or party--we will, within the space of a week or two, be faced by the lingar horrors of certain starvation. And in what position do the Merchant Service and Royal Naral Reserve sind?
Dealing firstly with the latter we have a force of uearly twenty-five thousand Officers and mea, all practionlly experienced merchant seaner, who seem to be looked upon in official quartom na u zocery evil. In fact, it hus been said by people of considerable authority that, but for outaging public fooling, the Royal Naval Reserve would be abolished to
morrow.
But to take the much more important ques. tion, that of the Marchant Servies, the one harrier between life and death, and what do we find? Nearly five hundred aliens commanding and ofleering British merchant ships, well
aliens over three thousand
serving in them as petty officers, whilst the glorious (?) Red Ensign is farcher stained by the fact that. no fewer than 37,694 aliens are serving under it.
In-war-time wo wo informed that conflential instructions are to be placed in the hands of the masters of British merchant ships. What is to prevent these instructions innocently falling into the hands of an alish? The Admiralty havo never answered the question, which the Guild have put to them more than once.
