CHEMISTRY OF SMOKING.
SOME YALLACLES ·NIYOSÉD.
There ama a good many fallacies current regarding tabaco and amoking (says Mr. H. Irving Hancook, writing in the New York Tribune). One of them relates to the quanti of nicotine that a smoker absorbs. It is so small; De to
be practically insignifionat. In the tobacco plant at maturity there is considerable nicotine; at the leaves are pat through a process of ouring and sweating, and, being a very volatile substance, a large percentage of the nicotine is driven from the tobacco during the sweating. When a pipe, a cigar, or a cigarette is lighted,
the best promptly volatilises the nicotine ställ remaining in the tobacco, For that resson the nearly all the nicotine passes from tobacco to the atmosphere. Some of the smoke is drawn into the smoker's mouth; but is usually preiaptly expelled, carrying with it nearly all traces of nicotine.
While nicotine is popularly known as the poison of tobacco, few people know anything of nicotine's chemical relatives, the pyridine basos, which also exist in tobacco. In burning, the tobacco sets them free as it does the nicotine. Up to the present, experiments in physiological laboratories have not demonstrated conclusively that appreciable quantities of either nicotine or the pyriding bases enter the eyetem of the smoker. This is not to be taken, however, as d statement that nicotine and its chemical cousins do no harm whatever to weed users. It is pos Bible, pro
probable, that almost infinitesimal quan tities do enter the smoker's system, and these, by cumulative effect, may in time work barns. POISONS THAT CAUSE INJURY.~*
There are two other poisons always to he found in tobacco smoke, ope inert in small quantities, the other more active. The burning of tobacco in air forms, by combination with oxygen, is familiar. two gases with which reader is One of these is carbon dioxid, or carbonic acid; the other is carbon monorid, the gas that is soon to bum with a blue flame at the top of coal fire. The volume of carbon dioxid given off in tobuto smoke is large; that of its more dangerous companion, carbon monoxid, is smaller.
How do any of these poisons enter the sys tem of the smoker? First of all, they aro capable of being absorbed to some extout through the mucous lining of the month. But it is in the lungs of one who inhales that the great harm is done. This senseless practice of encking the wncke down into the Jungs keeps up a constant and dangerous irrita tion of the delicate, sensitive membranes of those valuable organs. The burning
