COMMITTAL ORDER BESCINDED,

Yesterday's mail brought a report of the judgment given by the Judicial Committee in the case of the seven Chinamen who appealed to the King in Council from an order made by the Chief Justice of Hongkong (Sir Francis Piggott), committing them to prison for three months for contempt of court and perjury, contrary to an ordinance of the Colony. They were witnesson in a bankraptoy snit, in which the question at issue was whether one, Wong Ka Chuen, was a partner in the debtor firma or not. They gave evidence that he was. The jury found that he was not. After the verdict him and addressed them through an interpreter in the following terms:

Germany is quite aware that one of the chiof difficulties in the way of the Dunl Monarchy is the status or the vote peoples ander its rule; Magyar and German pretty well understand one another, and both are fully conscious that any rupture of the common bond of self interet which holds them together would mean the destruc tion of both. A story of the extraordinary impudence of the Chinese thief was told to the Hunghom Police on Sunday. On the night in question a number of natives entered the cable station near the Decks where the four caules belonging respectively to the Military Authorities, the Colonial Government, the Eastern Telegraph Co. and the Telephone Co are landed. They out off pieces of the cables and removed certain apparatus which entailed the interruption of the different services. After packing up all for a rest after their apparently sat down exertions. A lakoog on duty in the vicinity, happening to pass the station at the time, in saw by the dim light a native smoking noticed that the door was open, and on looking cigarette. His question as to what the man was doing there caused a stampede, all the thiovas dashing for the door. The constable held on to one man, and he will probably he charged shortly. The telephone service to and though the Telephone Company was uble Kowloon was interrupted all day yesterday to offset temporary repairs to their cable it will probably be a week before the mischief done in completely repaired.

It is barely two miles long and about three quarters of a mile broad, rises about forty feet above water and is really nothing more than a sandy bed on a foundation of coral Coral is found all round the lagoon and the approaches to the island, which have not been surveyed for about forty or fifty years are dangerous to navigation. When the hinese craiser Kenpan proceeded there with Com modore Lin and Captain Wu, it was discovered that there were about 150 Japanese on the island. They had made a track across the island, kad lighters at work, and also had a steam lanach. The Japanese were apparently finding their undertaking very remunerative.

RIVAL CLAIMS TO A PEERAGE.

ROMANCE OF A DANCER'S SON,

The legal struggle has been recommenced before the Madrid Assise Court between the two claimants to the estates, titles, and privileges of Lord Sackvile, the well-known diplomatist, who died in September last.

The two claimants are Mr. Lionel Edward Baskville-West, nephew of Lord Backville, and Mr. Ernest Henri Jean Baptiste West, the eldest son of Lord Sackville and a Spanish dancer, The points which the court has to con

These he recognised and declared legitimate, to interest of the case resides

The contract, the existence of which is pleaded by Mr. Lionel Edward Sackville-West, nephew of the late Peer, as establishing his right to moceed to the fille, was preserved in the Charch of San Millan, formerly San Cayetano, in Madrid, where the alleged marriage of Josephine Duran and Gabriel Oliva took place on January 10, 1851.

Copies of the contract were delivered for the use of conspis in the case in 1896 and in 1900, but none of these copies made any mention of erasures and insertions which were subsequently, in 1901, discovered on the marriage registers in the cares of an inquiry.
