NAVAL GUNNERY.
SPLENDID RECORD OF THE CHINA
SQUADRON."
Another triumph for the British Nary is recorded in the official Admiralty returns, issued last month, of the result of the test of gunleyers with heavy guns during last year of battle practice from torpedy destroyers; and of gan. layers with ligist quiol-fring guna.
The figures show the unequalled shooting efficiency of the Floot, and in each case surpass ail previous Fleet averages. Every year the all-round shooting of the Navy has improved, but never has it reached so high a level as at present.
The marvellous improvement in the gannery of the whole Navy is best shown by the following table of percentages of him to rounds fired with |howry guns during the past twelve years :--

It should be noted that a new target wOH adopted in 1907, on which the value of a hit is counted as less than previously.
The average of kits for the whole Navy last year with heary guns was actually better than that which in 1902 was reached only by the, "prack" shooting ship-the Terre, then commanded by Sir Percy Scott!
Their lordships note with satisfaction the further improvement in the results as compared with those obtained in 1907, when the shooting showed an advance over previous years." This is the sole Insonic comment that the Admiralty Lords allow themselves on so splendid an achieve- ment.
CHINA SQUADRON HEADS THE LIST,
Coming to details, it is interesting to note that the men of the China Squadron, si in 1907, again head the Hat in the big gun shoot- ing, while the best individual ship score is that of the Good Hope, Admiral Sir Percy Scott's flagship, in the Second Cruiser Squadron, which, to some extent at least, justifies its commander's well-known preference for "gun- nery before paint."
