Yesterday, however, TO-NIGHT! a cablegram received from the Secretary of the Hongkong Football Club by Rev. R. 0. Winning of the Shanghai Football Club Hongkong sloven would be unable to tell No arrangements by announcing that the reason was contained in the wins, but the weare tary added a couple of words saying that he this turns of affairs Mr. Winning cabled naking would write later. Naturally disappointed at whether it would not be possible to send up an eloven drawn from all the Hongkong Clubs, but a reply in the negative being received all hope. of bringing off the watch had to be abandoned. It is impossible to suggest any adequate reason for longkung's failury, except that differences of opinion may have temporarily wrecked the interport bout. According to the Hongkong papers the team chosen was a very weak one, and it seemed very likely from the local point of view that Shanghai would be easily able to wipe out the 3-0 defeat of last year.

The Artillerymen set the leather in motion, and some splendid play followed by onch team in the opening stages. The Buffs early becams aggressive, and Taylor solzing the first oppor- tunity scored by sharp low shot. The odds against thein sparred the EG.A to greater exertion. The forwards made smart dash across the fold, and Watts attempted to net, but was unsuccessful. Then the Artil lorymen were forced to defond, and, after their citadel had bean bombarded for a con siderable time, Taylor succeeded in penetrat ing from a struggle in front. The applause which sunounced the increase in the score had scarcely died away o'er the Artillerymen were again forced to defend, and again the net was found by Brawster. At half time the Artillery men were a beaten team, the brilliant and com. bined play of their oppenonta outclassing thean in every way. The K.G.A. apparently realised that with three goals against there and a team like the Buffs. for opponents it was useless to continue the struggle, consequently the final stages of the game were not so fast as the opening ones. The Buffs continued through out to play a splendid. game, features of which were the clever foot and head work and the ex- cellent combination against which the Artillery men stood not the slightest chance. The loasts, however, had several opportunities throughout the match, but were too slow to take advantage of them. Before time was announced both Drew and Taylor and added to the score of the Buffs.

LEAGUE MATCHES, Only three League Extures were played off this week end, the Naval Yard and the B.O.C. devoting the day to the Shield competition The meeting of the League giants, the Buffs and the R.G.A., was anticipated as the match of the day, bat, instead of providing a keen tude, it witnessed the crashing defeat of the Artillery- men. Such a debacle was most unexpected. Another surprise was the victory of the Y.M.C.A. over the R.E., the latter receiving their first defeat this season. The strengthened EAMC team easily accounted for the Lusitano. It looks as if nothing now can stop the triumphant march of the Buffs to the head of the League and the proud possession of the Hongkony Daily Press Cup for this year.
