In the latter part of his life he enjoyed comparative liberty, and finally died only 16 years ago, having fent com saded his disciples to turn their faces towards his eldest son, Abbas Effead. Raha- Hah's own account of his mission was that he was sent to unite all the faiths and peoples of the world into one, Bebsism seemed, on the whole, to be an adaptation of the Christian religion to what its founder conceived to he the needs of the present day. The most momentous labour war in the history of the Lancashire oelton industry began on Saturday. All the employees in practically all the spinning mille of the county were locked out owing to the refusal of the great majority of the operatives to Recept a reduction of a shiling the pound on their

Wages on Jaunery The dispute immediately affects 130,000 operatives, But the whole cotton industry is dependent on the spinning mills, and, should thefight be prolonged, at least 1,210,000 workers will be thrown idle, aud, with their dependants, over 3,000,000 people will be affoted.

The facts of the dispate may be summarised briefly as follows:-

In August the employers, owing to the bad condition of trade, decided to reduca the ages of the operatives by 5 per cent, threatening general leak-pat if the raduction were not accepted,

The operatives, after a ballot, related a reduction, bat offered to accept it in January if trade was stil bad then.

The employers, in reply, offered to postpone the reduction till January on the condition that it should take place then whatever the condition of trade..

The operatives asked for time to take a second ballot. This was refused.

The spinners, the aristocracy of the trade, sucesided in taking a second ballot, and agreed to the reduction as from January.

The great army of workers who prepare the raw cotton and on whose work the spinners| depand, were unable to take a second ballot, and adhered to their previous refusal.

In consequenss of this the Empires Fedora- tion ordered a goudral lock-out.

THE LOOK OUT ORDSE. The following letter, ordering a geneal look out, was required by every firm in the Employers' Federation on Saturday morning
