GUNNERY IN THE CHINA SQUADRON.

Referring to the gunnery tests of the China Squadron, the London Globe says:-

In taking over the command of the Chlos station early this year Vice Admiral Sir Bedworth Lambton inherited, as it were, from Vice-Admiral Sir A. W. Moor, a flagship in the King Alfred" which held a world's reword for gannery, and the determination apparently is to sustain this reputation.. In point of fact the firing in the light quick-firing test, which tools plaas at Wei-hai-woi on July 15, is better than it was last yeaF, EN seen io the following comparative results for the 12-pounder guns: 1987. 149 rounds, 100 hits; 1968, 143 rounds: 104 hits. Last year the best 12-pounder gun fired 12 rounds and inade 11 bits, whereas this year the highest individual scure was 16 rounda 14 bite, which is claimed as a world's record for this type of gan. The credit for this remarkable firing bolonge to H. Blayder, a seaman gunner, out in No. 3 hold. The fire was a slight clars. Another meritorious performance was and was extinguished after three quarters-of- an-hour by the ship's oraw who worked immemade by Abin Semsa Beach (Soudan Gagner), diately, with the fro cafuguisher on bourd, and in geting, off 17 rounds at bitarmer), afterwards by pamping water into the hold, three pounder, Just before his time was up The damaged cargo in hold loaded with Boob unfortunately bid a misfire, but for Australian and Colombo cargo was discharged which, it is bettered, he would have been able

A telegram from Melbourus states. that Mr. Deakin, speaking at a dinner given by the' Yacht Club in honour of the American said that the sending of the Best was perhaps the most generous.concussion meds in recent years by one nation to another. The lesson to was enable to take a first place in the world until she had a first elaes navy, so Australia will not be content until she was able to accept her defence with her own hands. She should begin to make provision for a navy in a modest way.

While heartily congratulating Sir Hodworth Lambton and the officers and abip's company' of the "King Alfred" on these splendid resulta Lieutenant W. F. Franob, the gunnery officer, special mead of praise must be given to sad the group

For instance from the Bedford's" eight 12. pounders, 76 round were head, with 61 hits, the best gan firing 11 rounds, all of which hit the balluere. The rate of fire was also grod, 1036 roads being got off per minute with an average good record in gunnery, ie credited this year of bits. The "Kent," another ship with a with 42, hiss out of 75 rounds from her 12. The Kent's rate of fire was 10.22 rounds per pounders, the best run bei. g 10 rounds, 8 kits. minute, with an average of 5,72 hits. BATTLE IN MIÐ-AIR.

STIRLING SPECTACLE OYAK BERLIN. The Daly Mail of August 21f" "pablishes the following from its Berin correspondent- The Parseval and the Gross, Army airships afforded Berlin a thrilling spectacle of minis battle high in the air this morning, .

The Grom sexol appeared over Berlin hafore Fight o'clock, passing over Unter den Linden and the royal castle, and going thence to the densely crowded quarters around the Potsdamer Platz, which, in the matter of tr fio, is Be hu's. Strand. The ship sailed at a height of 750ft.. following the lius of the streets, arranging races with the electric tramway cars, and beating them all, although they ran at their highest speed.

It was a wonderful sight to see the gigantic cruiser so near that the dotiils of the working of the rasobardiam were discernible, the screw revolving at a great pace and the steering gear ting with automatio precision, inally the aeronauts directed the skip towards the historic Brandenburger Gate, near-the-Reichstag..build. ing, where another powerful airship, approach- ing wish heavy and imposing movements, was

It was the Purseval, which had come after the other from Tegel,"

The two sirships now began to maneuvre, against each other as if intent on the destruction of an enemy. Upwards and downwards they went, attempting to get into a favourable position for attack, describing circles and spiral lines, and dashing forward and backward,

B

Suddenly, the Gross airship turned in northerly direction, taking a course for Tegel. It was immediately followed by the Parseval hip. At Tegel the "battle" was resumed, and for another half-hour the Tesla operated against one another, ring cunningly while waiting for a moment for the enemy to expose s vital part. Finally they-raced side by site at fall speed at the igual to stop Aghting was gives, whereupon both de seandéd without mishap.

On board the Gross vessel was the reigning Duke Ernet als Baze Altenburg, who Reveral Times took the helm and navigated the ship very ably,

ADMIRAL SPERRY ON PEACE.

Admiral Sperry, acknowledging the heartinees of the greeting given to the American Fleet at Auckland spoke as follows:-The Imperial interests of both our grest nations in the Pacific are the age. From Naw Zealand, at the lowest point, to the uttermost point of the Philippines--from New Zealand north east towards Hawaii and the cost of the United States, there is an nobroker chain of cammon interests. These common interests to-day are only beginning to develop, and their magniinde is almost impossible for us to appreciate. They are growing day by day with the expansion of trade and the opening of the Panama Canal. Common interests need common protection. It very well and essential that the principles pazne should be settled by the Hagas Con- fareuce, bat it is ostential that there should be a guarantee that those principles will be followed, and the two groot fets which most at Auckland with "s cammon interest. make for tbut pacs. (Applause.) They make for Anglo-Saxon peace throughout the Pacifio. It is fitting that the Imperial interest should be recorded as common. It is peculiarly gratifying that each country borongh and municipality has sont figs as token of welcome to prevent their sentiments, where their people are unable to do so by the word of mouth, as they have been doing ad the morning to the streets (Laughter and phascal.
