Some days back, says the P. & T. Times of May 23rd the members of the Grand Council of State and the President of the Board of Finance held a mecting in the presence of their. Majesties the Emperor and the Express- Dowager in the Imperial Palace to consider the roorganization of the Chinese monetary system. At first their Excellencies Yuan Shib-kai and Chang Chih-tung were in favour of the coining of the one-tael-in-weight silver coin for airou. dation in the various Provinces in order to check the Mexicon and other forsige dollars with a view to probeling the Chinese financial interests; but her Majesty and most of the Grand Councillors did not support the proposal, which was then shelved. It was eventually decided to cota silver dollars of the same size and weight as the Mexican and other foreign coins in addition to the following subsidiaries

It was also decided that the new coine will be made of better silver than those existing so as to facilitate their circulation.
