This not and its bearing on general questions diet and bygiene have recently come to the front ia medio literature. In opening a discussion in the physiological section of the British Association, on the effects of alcohol, Professor Cashey, who holds the chair of pharmacology in the University of Loadou, stated that sugar is obemically a meraber of the alcohol series, the more complex thin ordinary alcohol, and that the bebaviour of the two substances in the organiam in similar, since the the greater part of each la oxidizet in the tissues with. the production of both muscular and heat energy. Ha strongly asserted, however, these facts by no means prove alcohol to be a suitable food, either in sickness or in healtà, Dr. Dizon, one of the later speakers, took up this point in the following manner,

The most remarkable point about alcohol was ite rapid absorption from the stomach, and dur- ing ably absorbable mbstances, including it seated in the absorption of ather not ordinary articles of food. It was absorbed and oxidized exactly as starch and sugar, and these con'd be replaced by aloob as an energy.pro- ducing substanes, The action of a small quantity of alcohol is giving the heart s readily assimilable form of food substance was exactly similar to that of ungar, which was normally ordinary sugar in the body was not burned off oxidized to alcohol.
