A NOVEL MOTOR BOAT.

A boat embodying very novel points has been constructed and tried at Genon. In the first place it is driven by twin asiel propellers These are of aluminium, enck weighing about 26 lbs, and are worked apparently by

belting, from a motor of 80 to 10 bp, cylinders 7 in diameter,

7 in. stroke, 1,20 revolations. The beat itself is 28 ft. 3 in. long, and when fully equipped with two man weighs 3,300 Iba, or nearly 1 tons. The other novel feature is that at the bow and stern are V.sbaped plates o diaposed that when the boat is driven ahead there is a vertical component of the pressure lifting the boat At the speed of 6.9 miles and bour the bow begins to lift; at 15.5 miles per hour the ball is wholly out of the water. only the flat portion at the stern skimming along the surface. It is stated that the speed of 435 miler an hour has ban obtained, and at this speed the hall is 18 in, out of the water. These are very astonishing results, and there seems to be more thrust obtainable from air propellers than I had thought possible. The engine. vary

light,

and the whole concern is a msy, but even discounting the results a good deal thers case for experiment in the use of air pro pollers for boats in which exesadingly light draught is absolutely essential. The ide is a very old one, and was investigated by the late Mr. Froade. The resulta of bis model experiments would not have led one to suppose that with such small planes a fitted in the present boat such a considerable lift would have been obtained. Further and more exhaustive trials are promised, which will to awaited with considerable interest. The system is hardly commercially practicable because of the necessarily light and demsy con struction of all the parts, but this renders it bone the less valuable from a professional and sientific point of view.
