AT THE SAILORS HOME.
It was early one Sunday afternoon when my wife, who had been out nearly a year, suggested we should visit the Sailors Hom?..
She had been at the morning service, she informed me, and the beautiful hymu "For those in peril on the sn” had struck a chord in her heart, awakening her sympathies for the poor sailors, who as sho said, were friendless and lonely in a strange land, and it was surely the duty of Christian people to do what they could, and
Very well, ogly you will find it very an interesting and its much better to lears that sort of thing to the olergy of the different denomjustions you know," but already she had gone to get rondy for the journey,
The sloping syce rose up with words of "Love perfect love" on bla tongas at this outrageous departure, and soon we were ratth ing into the parch of the Home, at the gats of which sat and sanked a dozen or so specimens of the men who go down to the sea in ships." The promiscuous garbs formed a refreshing sabject of meditation, one having his trouser seat adorned with a large patch of what is known as shepherd's tartan, forming an off-ctiva son- trast to the other portion.
The Superintendent being duly informed of our arrival and my wife's interest in the material and spiritual welfare of his charges, after nu}=- ing us they were a bad lot at present, even for sailorman, ushered us apstairs while the man were sent for..
I strolled to a large table on which were strewn ancient literature, which I studied al- ternately with the texts which adorned the walls, while my wife talked to her new acquaintances, I oculd see she was especially attracted by a little ginger-headed fellow with a hooked nosa and a pair of bright eyes, who was pouring out to her "a tale of imaginary woos" of which I could catch only from time to time usch backneyed expressions as "Eathen ind,” “Thank the Lord," and such like patter,"
One of the men near me said to his neighbour with a grla "Gassie 3ue is going it strang," and I knew Mary-bad landed on one of those rascals who delight in leading on spinster ladies and pious old gentlemen,
After what seemed snaga, Mary came up with a suggestion of tears in her eyes and demanded how much ready cash I had.
Tom, what do you think. One of the men has been speaking to me about his wife and family at home, and of the shipwreoke he has experienced, and above all he belongs to Brighton "this was where Mary had been at His strange in his taik and School, and he is very religious, although
oh dear me, bia wife and children are starring !!
Now I had a few small notes, a omple of dollars, and some change, and I answered
"I think I have some small change, dear." She turned indignantly, Much good that would be to send a starving wife. Have you not Slop"
....
I hesitated and ignoring the direct question, said with simulated eagerness can write out a chit you know, and he can come to the godowa for it to morrow,
Then at her earnest request I went to inter- view her protégé and bear his laments.
Tell husband all you have said to me,"

SOUTHERN BHAN STATES. The total trade of this country increased by 1332 per cent, for, although the imports decreased by 45 par sent, the exports showed an increase of 25.3 per cent. Trade was greatly hampered by the plague and wild ramoura regarding the severity of the epidemio. The droad of this securge deterred people. from leaving their villages to convey produce to trading centres. In imports, which amounted to Rs. 67.89.86), there was, consequently, mariced decrease, especially under the head of cattle, owing to the costiand
pravalope of cattle disonas, and in silk piece goods and silver.
The dolins under these heads has boon partly ounterbalanced by the enormout increase in stick la (R. 6,30,000) and cattle of hides (R4.187,000). Potatoes, the cultivation which has been taken in hand only during the past six years, have now becomes staple product PRE of the country. The supply has increase from 5,00,00, last year to 7,001,00016. In exports, to the value of Rs. 94,16,613, with the exception of apparel, there was an increase in almost every article, principally in plece goods, European betel nuts, gold, and silver, the abnormal increase in the latter being due to timber merchants baving exported money to work the forests in the Southern Shan States.
NORTHERN SHAN STATES.
The total trade increased by 783 par cant. Imports aggregating Rs. 67,81,817 showed an increase of 3:47 per cent., principally under hides, stick lac, land timber. Tas, which is the largest item of import from these parts (to the value of Rs. 22,6,696), showed a decrease of two lakhs of rupees in the dry leaf; but there WAS an increase of the wet, or pickled, tea owing to remarkably low prices of the latter, the best quality boing sold at R423 par 100 vis (395th as ag inst Rs.33 to Rs.35, and the inferior Fiad at.
