The irritation which causes the deposition of Fearls appears to be variously produced. In a xew report on the pearl oyster fisheries of Ceylon, Prof. W. A. Herdman slates that some pearls appear to be formed around grains of Band, and some of inferior quality are probably disease calculi, but most and the best pearls are deposited around a parasitic worm. Pearly ex crescences on the interior of the shell, are-dus to irritation caused by boring animale. Besides these there are (1) ampullar pearls where the nucleus and resulting pearl lie between the shell and the body, (2) musele pearls, formed around minnte calcareons concretions near the insertions of the muscles; and (3) gynt pearle, formed around enorsted-parasites. The artificial infection of oyster in Caylon, which has been preposed, speche nunecessary, at the parasites are likely to find all pearl oysters næaided,
The discovery that pieric acid will at once reliore the pain of burns and cause speedy heal ing was made accidentally, by Dr. Thierry, of the Paris Charity Hospital. Use of pieric acid as an antiseptic impregnated his hands with the solution, and he noticed one day that a lighted match dropped on his hand caused no pain and a little later that cauterizing the skin by hot WaI was anfelt Experiment then showed that the saturated solution of picric acid prevented blisters and cured the barns completely in four or five days.
An ordinary steam locomotive can draw its own weight up a five per cont grade. The locomotive for the new Pay de Dome road fitted with the Haascotte system of adherence wheels pressing against a middle rail, is expected to take three loaded trallers up a 12 per cent, rise at 7 miles per hour.

Chinese Engineering and Mining Shares have buyere at T. 14 ex the final dividend of Is. 6d, per share payable to-day; the total output of the Company's three mines for the wook ending 12th ultimo, amounted to 24,075 toes of cos), and the sales during the sme period to 18,308 tons. At the annual general meeting held in London on 28th altimo,
final dividend of one chilling and six patepar share free of tax has been declared by the directors of this Company, thus making a total of 15 per cent for the year ending 28th Rabruary, 1907. Coupon No. 9 is payable to-day at the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, and the Russo Chinese Bank at Tientsin and Shanghai.
The culturo in France of the soy-bear, whose producte are so important in the dietary-of the Chinese and Japanose, is baing urged by Chinese in Paris. A parés pressed from the boiled seeds yields both milk and ohesse, thinging with water producing a very good substitute for animal milk, and coagulating with a mineral salt fitting the material for cheese-making. The cheese is usually enter fresh, though it may be preserved by salting or smoking, first being cooked. Three varieties of the cheese are common in Oriental markets-280. Hongkong Cottons go lugging at $104. fermented kind being white, yellow or gray in color, with a piquant taste like that of Roquefort; while another sort is salty and white, like goats-milk chesse; and the third smoking and resembles Gruyère. The soy cheese costs about a fiftieth as much as animal cheese, while the nutritive value of both this and the vegetable milk compares very favorably with the ordinary products from the cow,

The new colored wood of a Norwegian firm is produced by torcing the sap from green logs and injecting dyes. The treated wood has in- areased durability, will not warp, may be polish ad in the usual manner, and most of the colors are claimed to be as stable as that of mahogany. The material is expecially suitable for furniture.

Aa optimistic view of radiotherapy is taken by the British Dermatological Society, which has decided tht Roentgen rays are practically a specific for numerous skin diseases, curing, or benefitting acne, lapus, eczema, psoriasis; pruritus, tines, and others including even caner. or eighty cases of epithelioma involving the skin only, all were cared, with no recurrence, "Dr. Justus found no recurrence after two years, and he considers the use of the knife necessary only in certain cases favorable to operation. The amphibious automobile of N. Ravaillier, a Parisian engineer, has a boat hull body with a space for the ohaios operating the rear wheels, 58 montated on arles passing through water light tubes, has a screw-propeller and a rudder in addition to the four wheels, and is driven. by a twenty horse-power motor.. !t has the speed-changing, reversing and other features of the ordinary automobila, In water it is operated like any boat, and its motor wheels take it up banka with a slope of not more than fifteen per cent, while a tackle and windlass pull it up steeper inclines.
