American markets. The Japanese Coneal at Foeshow, in his report on teamphor industry in Chica, says: The Chiness have begun to tako a lively interest in the manufacture of camphor as a profitable industry, and it is spreading to the provinces of Seath China. Owing to the improvement in the methods nows Chinese camphor manufacture, commands a price about £ve times greater than it was a fa years ago. Last year's export from Foochow amounted to 1,000,000 kin.. The great docline of the market experienced during May last has given a blow to the manufacturers; nevertheless, it is estimated that the total output for the year will reach something like four million kin. During the first half of this year 1,350,000 kin of camphor had been exported from Foachow." Now, the yearly amonot of camphor Japan has been supplying to the world is four to five million kin, and even though the demand for the commodity may have increasel more or less it is not surprising that its price should greatly decline when the abundant supply of Chines camphor is taken into consideration. t'the same time the trade in Japan, which was beginning to grow rapidly with the increasing demsed for camphor, ceased expansion when the Govern ment took it over and made it a monopoly, Before that date the export (in 191) reached the year after the 5 value of 13,900,000 menopoly was lostituted export dropped to a value of Y3,100,000, and the following year to Y2,500,000. Last year there was recovery to Y3,000,000 owing to the high prices which prevailed, and for the present year figures seem to be maintained. It is clear, however, that unless the world's demand for camphor greatly increases in the sear future, or the Chinese industry is blott d out, it will become increasingly difficult for Japan to maintain the monopoly price,

COMMERCIAL CLAIM AT KYOTO.

IMPORTANT LAW SUIT PANDING, According to a Japanese contemporary, a case will shortly come on in the Kpato. Court in which Mr. P. E. Wootton, manager of the American Trading Company, Kobs, sua Mr. Keiscks Yamada, owner of an ice-stare lu in Teramichi dori, Kyoto, for the sum of T43,207.30, balance alloged to be due on the sale of machinery.

According to the claim filed by Mr. Hirata, representative of the plaintiff, in November, 1901, ice-manufacturing whinery was supplied to the defendant by the plaintiff company for Y91,663 75 on the agreement that the defendant should pay the total amount in three Instal. menta. Defendant paid Y60,000 in two instal nents, but the balance remained due. The term

fixed

at April of delivery of the machinery was 33th, and it was further agreed that if delivery was delayed the plaintiff company pay the defendant Y350 per day bat if the macluiuers was delivered to d fendant earlier than the contracted form, the defendant should pay the plaintiff at the rate of Y100 per day.

As the machinery was delivered on June 19th, plaintiff demanded from defendant the extra som of Y1,10). Further in January this year the plaintiff agreed to sell a boiler to the defendant for 13,050, which was delivered to the defendant, who, however, romitted the payment of YL, the sum of Y9,170 remaining unpaid. The defendant also don- tracted to purchase from the plaintiff company 35 tons of estoian the price of Y0 per ton, and delivery was duly mads in Jane lost; but defendant had so far neglected to make payment. The hearing of the case will shortly take place in the Kyoto Court.
