NOTICE TO CONSIGNEES.

STEAMSHIP "TREMONT,"

THE ATTEMPTED TOBACCO TRUST | to the American became the British-American

MONOPOLY

The following letter to the Shanghai Mereary, by Mr. C. K. Sun, has interest hero

Most of your readers have, no doubt, taken sn interest in the straggle for the monopoly of the Chinese tobacco trade, now being waged between the British-American Tobacco Trust and the Japanese Government Tobacco, Monopoly. As a bids issue, though on a scale immensurably smaller than either of the farmer, e me in the Chinese Cigarette companies, whose operations have been sadly interfered with in the war of the giants, get whose interests are locally of some interest and importance in their connection. with the industrial progress of the place.

In the struggle, the British-American Trust bas heon pushing forward with tremendous energy, and has Loen freely making use of the adsastagen it possesses in the enormous financial resonicces at its command, and is prepared to adopt almost say measares ia its power, order to crush its competitors. The weak Chinese companies are one by one attacked, and put out of existence, and the Japanese Gorernment Moneply is beginning to feel the competition very keenly as is shown in the falling off of their exports. Thus in the yoar 1905 their exports to China amounted in alue to no less than 3,523,000 you while in 1900 this had fallen le 1,978, 00 yen, a reduction in a terelve month of 45 per cent. The acknowledged, profita again on the Tobacco Monopoly show a redue- tion of no less than 3,313,000 yen from the proceeding year.

Ay no accounts are gives to the public it is impossible to say what are the profts of the British-American Trust in Chius, but as they cover a ranch larger field of operations they

must be enormous.

Trust.

For some little time the British-consumer. boycotted the new Trait cigareties but the lafter having-gained-the-powerful aid of the chief houses in the trade was able to laugh at the feeble and intermittent action of its opponents add after a time the boycott died gut. Of course the boycott while it lasted- injured the Trust in its sorest paint-the oxpenditars of much money, and reduced profte; eren as the boycott in Chies against American trade generally injured the trade of the Tobacco Trust for a time. But here again perseverance and the possession of fands, which it

extant, was prepared to spend to an unlimited came to the rescue, and the somewhat spasmodic opposition died away.

It is very

clear after this explanation that to keep those Trust" cigarettes out of our country and restore the tobacco trade which constitutes & very important part of China's agricultural and industrial resources, will nood a very determined staul, and can only be accomplished by some such methods as I havə suggested above.

BRITISH DECADENCE,

The great strength of England has always ala in the class who are called commons or commoners. Meanwhile it would be wise in our own interests to look into the matter a little more. closely, with a view to discovering how the best results are obtainable. If, for instance, the cigarette dealers and manufacturers could be in duced to form a cooperative manufacturing and- distributing guild, into which the shopkeeper us wall could be admitted, and the profits be divid
