In modern-isa, the subdial is chiefly sn ornament, as the ordinary instrument requires troublesome calculations to show anything like true time, and it can be consulted only during hours of sunshine. The photo heliometer shown at the late size ret the Loudon-Royal Savidly Igan improved sun-dial giving direct time read inge with suficient precision for regulating Common clocks and watche. It consiste resou. tially of a ball-and-socket stand for adjustments in latitude and isvol, an hour circle which can allde-round to follow the apparent motion of the sun, and a year circle on which are engraved the months. Greenwich mean time is indicated when the hour circle is more so that the spot of light coming through an upper serven falls on the contral line.
