HOME AND CHINA AFFAIRS. (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)

London, August 2nd.

END OF THE SEASON.

The Goodwood race meeting this week forinally closes the Season for Society, but I notice many people in London even n w, though it is officially considered "empty." Ana mattor of foot the dull weather and the prolongation of the Parliamentary session combine to keep a good number of well known people in the West End beyond their usual dates, and some of the theatres, taking advantage of this state of things are not chaing so early se usual for the summar vacation. Beveral of the leading theatres aro" doing unexpectedly well for the loss of their rup, for there are orowds of American and Coloniat visitors here in addition to regular Londen playgoers. In a week or two however all these theatres will be sending their companies touring in the provinces, specially to the health resorts, and I hear that at less than fifly con ..panies will be" on the road" this summer.

—JAPANESE WAITERS.

Some of the papers have been interested to hear that the Japanese government is establish- a school for waiters to be trained in European motheds. A picture is drawn of the improvement in our restaurants if the staff consisted of quick, eat banded-Japanese, instead of other foreigners who at prosent confuse our orders and bring us what we do not want and bring it very slowly. But if the Japanese cate; doubtless there would be a wail from these

waiters that "British labour" was being cat out, and the Yellow-Feril would take a new meaning. In British Columbia just now the arrival of twelve hundred Japaness labourers for the railways and the canning works is arousing such an ontory, in spite of the feet that the scarcity of labour from British sources is holding the development of Canada back very seriously.
