SHIPPING.
I mentioned in one of my previous lattern that the Hamburg American Line had taken over part of the Woormann fleet of steamers and was abant to open a regular service between this and the African ports. It appears that thinbasled the Hamburg-Bremen African Company whiob was started last year in opposition to the Woormann's line, much to the delight of African merchants who were glad to coupe Ost about from the monopoly of the latter, for an ally sufficiently powerful to enable them to meet the Hamburg American Line on usual berms, as it is well known that this company is in the habit of waging a ruthless fraight-war against weaker competitors. It seeme that negotiations have been entered into with the Norddeutscher Lloyd, which according to the newspapers, intends to issue freab shares to the extent of· M5,000,000.—for the purpose of taking over the new African line in nume form or other. It has been officially denied that sa increase of capital is contemplated by the great Bremen company, but the opinion prevails both here in the poighbouring city, that an amalgamation is likely to be ectod, for which however no additional capital would be required. The acting oolonial secretary, Herr Dornburg, is believed to favour the plas.
