I came to England with practically no friends in this country are two, one whom I had known when he was in Tokyo, and the other whom I know not by meeting but by correspondence, These two gentlemon introduced me to other referred me to others, and friends, who in from them I received the most cordial treatment. I found that letters of introduction are a power here. They are taken not merely a lutrodue tiens bat as high recommendatione. No matter in what brief and simple words they are couched, the recipients do all they can for the party who brings them. If the men to whom you have a ray, his friends think letter of introduction is away, it incumbent on them to take his place. In one gentleman who happened case I had a letter to to be out of town when I called. One the ove of the review, a mutual friend wrote to say that he had sent word to a certain captain asking him to look after me. Next morning when I got to that captain's house was surprised to hear that he had received a telegram from the Secretary at the War Office on the previous night, which read in substance as follows: "War Office gave Sugimura every accommodation for review, Bat understanding that you will accompany him to marrow would give you similar accommodation.
It is a mystery to me how the War Offles coma tu know that Captain-would be with me, and I am still amazed at the kindness and thoughtfulness which led its officials to take ould I have such trouble for a stranger. expected sach far-reaching consideration evan from my own countrymen ?
Another thing that has attracted my admira- tion hears has been the punctuality of all classes, People in London reply to each letter they ro- csive, and observe appointments strictly to the hour named.
