SUGGESTED REVERSION TO OLD DESEET ROUTE.
Mr. Edward Dissy is the latest to take up the question of reviewing the practis, of carrying the Indian mails overland from Alexandria to Suaz. On the 17th February, Mr. Dicey Brat mentions that he has heard reports that the Indian Mall Service is likely to be transferred from Brindisi to Mareilles, adding that by next season a new line of Augle Belgian tarbine elcamara will be running, at the speed of twenty knots, from Maravillos to Alexandria, and will do the passage in seventy hours including a stoppage at Mossins for coaling purposes.
If the Peninsular and Oriental Company contemplate such a step, says Mr. Dicey, he

MATS,
If this improvement could be carried oul thers. would be many advantages to most of the inter- ests concrued by reverting to the old Sass desert route, and transmitting the Indian mails across Egy by railway instead of by the Capal. Abzandria is about 150 miles aeary than Port Said to Marseilles Alexandria is also a far better harbour than Port Said, and is in which goods and passengere ein ba ianded along the quase instead of being landed by zege aud hate from the steamers which at Part Bail, have to lie in mid-etrum. The Penin sularaad Oriental Company wou'd thus have the enormous charges for every passager and every

the only difference being that the mails would not be exrriel from ons gleamer to another, as is the casa now at Port Said, but from the railway to a steamer which would make Soez, and not Port Said, its point of departure, and arrivals for both mails and passengers to India and the Far East.

What interests me in this project, which would be equally applicable supposing. Brindisi ware to be still the European port of the Peninsular and Oriental Company, is the enormous saving in time and trouble noorn- ing thereby to travellers to Egypt. The mails might easily reach Cairo from London on Tuesday, instead of ou Wednesday. The discomfort of the stoppace at Port Said and the long round-about tedious line from Portswill sales are reported at time of closing Said through Ismail-Zagazig, and Banbah would be avoided, and the cost of the journey to Egypt from England might wall be material. ly reduced out of the saving effected by the Peninsular and iontal Umpany owing to their mail steamers having no longer to traverse the Canal. Of course, there may be obvious objections to the idea in question, bat as having been a passenger by the Peninsular and Oriental since I first cam to Egypt in 1859. and as being, if I may say so, an old friend of the Board, I think it only fair to tell them that there is considerable irritation in Egypt at the way in which passangare for Egypt are neglected in comparison with passengers for Indin..
