NEW YORK.
Au extraordinary panic was caused in all parts of this city on March 3rd by un explosion of dynamite at the New Jersey end of the tunnel of the Pennsylvania Railroad which is being constructed under the Hudson River. This is situated at Homestead, about two miles" from New York. The entire store of dyne. mite, the quantity of which bas ant yet been ascertained, exploded. Windows were broken all over this city, persons is hotels and restaurante rushed into the streets, and it was the general belief that on earthquake bal occurred. Many of the police reserves were called out, and at some points large crowds of terrified people congregated. The explosion was felt as far away as Greenwich, 60 miles from New York, where bouses were shaken as though by an earthquake.
Considering the force of the explosion, astonishingly little damage was tione in the immediate vicitity. Some konses were wrecked and a few persors wore injured, but according to the latest reports nobody was killed. The first reports were that from 30 to 70 persoas were dead.
