Or if he conrees, it can only be by some indirect process of law, and not at all by the naked use of the central authority. We should have thought it was only rebellion and to be treated as such. Else what is the worth of any treaty with the central Govern- ment? If that is the admitted state of

YMCA. V. ROYAL ENGINEERS.
Au Association game wa played at Happy Valley on Saturday betwe thewo teams, the players pa oock side being:-
Y.M.C.A.: Hickling; Hamilton and Mo Gabbia, Collins, Barlow and Piorcy ; asser, Griffiths, Wilks, Cayne and Skino.
Royal Engineers: Dana; Hanson and Beard. more: Williamson, Sapper Amphlett and Corp. Amphlett; Johnson, White, Turner, Vaughan and Bell.
The game was a tame one, and did not appeal mach in the large crowd that had gathered to witness it. The Engineer's started off with nive man, two substitutes boing procured later, and it was sista that only three of their League players were on the field, while the T.M.C.A. rolled up in foras, and as cventa proved fairly tired their apponants out. In the opening stages pressure before the Engineers' gool was long continued, being eventually relieved by Bell who was making good his way along a clear field when he was ruled off side. A trying time followed for the soldiers' keeper, and although bo stood his ground well, Wilks at last succesded in passing him and put the nesociation one up just before the ball was BDBOU?cod.
Half-time: Y.M.C.A, 1; Engineers, 0. In the second half the Engineers complotady collapsed, perhaps en account of the excellent play of the Y.M.C.A.quintetta. Wilks, in centre, was always where he was wanted, and through- out the half did oxcellent work for bia sido, After a lengthy struggle he succeeded in notching a accond goal, Griffithe following later with another, the store being supplemented by Collins before the whistle sounded.

A Rugby match between the Club, and the Garrison was played at Happy Valley on Saturday, and saded in an eany win for tha Club. The teams were:-

son, Macdonald and Rusking, With 6.,ven men to the Garrison's ten, it was not surprising that shortly after the start the Club should be well up on the Garrison's line where a penalty was awarded them. Pearos bad a try and saxceeded in secaring a goal. Potley's- succeeding dash through the forwards was
successful. Passing it to Pearce, it was for- warded to Prashar and passed on to Daniels who was down on tho line. From the scrimmage a Club forward fell across the line securing the Bret try of the day. The kick at Bometime afterwards goal, however, failed. Daniels secured another try as the result of the good work of Feroe and Proshaw. Pearce converted it, and I was not long before be zoored again from a good position secured by Preeta.
Half-time: Club, 16; Garrison, nil.
On resuming the Club added another try, after which Jonghia scored near the posts and Peares was again unerring. The Garrison then invaded (lab territory, but Preahaw succeeded in breaking through the rook, and was making down a clear field when be wan overtaken by Down. He succeeded, nevertheless, in crossing the line, bat Daniels failed in an S. E. Green, A. O. Brawn, L. A. Rose, L. E. Lam- ensy shot.
