OFF MANS COMPETE SUCC 88SFULLY WITH JAPANESE.
A Japanese contemporary observas, that Japanese manufactures, inferior in quality, are able to compete with European and American goods. This advantage is due to the cheapness of labour in production. Lately, however, German goods are underselling Japanese in Chinn, and the resson is assigned by our con- temporary to the fact that Japanese moh factures, being made in small ineturi, tie cost of production is correspondingly higher.
The amount paid in Tokyo for instauca, for Boap-making is Y6 0,00 per glycering for sanum, but if the existing emell fustories were incorporated, with the consequent purchase of of glycerine in large bulk, the sum of would be sufficient to supply the requirement. The responsibility for this assertion-whereby a saving of 66 per cent. is effec'ed—rests with our contemporary,
Japanese merchants are generally indifferent te lo freightage charged when shipping goods to Chins, continues the journal. They pay the freight demanded by shipowners, and this fict in many sex makes the price of Japanese goods in the Chiness masket higher than Gorman goods.
STEAMERS WITHOUT MASTS.
The old shipbuilders of fifty years ago would probably be astonished at some of the latest pro ductions of the genins of their successors, particularly the most recent development, the mnastless steamer. Tho Toucer, now jording. for the Far East, is one of five similar steamers ordered by the Ocean Steamship Company--- familiarly known as the "Blus Funnel Lin." In those steamers masts have been entirely dispensed with, their place being taken by fear pillars, arranged in pairs, fore and aft, whose sole use is to tot as crane posts" for dorricks. The two forward pillars are joined by a look- out bridge, tight fest above the water line, which will probably be an advantago in heary weather. The Tautos, which has been built by Messrs. Hawthorn, Leslie and Co., of Hebburn on-Tyne, is hitted with twin surows, and is 482ft. long, 58ft, in beam, and 42ft, 6in. deep, with a dead-weight capacity of about 13,000
вода.
She has accommodation for a large number of troops or emigrants in the forecastle and tween decks, and her cargo arrangements are of a very complete nature, comprising twenty- sir wishes, thirty-six derricks, and gear capable of lifting weights up to thirty-six tona.
