JOINT STOCK SHARES. Mesars. Vernon & Smyth may in their weekly share report, dated Hongkong, March Erd We have nothing of any importanes to report: the market remains featureless and inactive. Rates, however, in most cases rule steady, and buyers of some fow stocks cannot be gatisto, more dividend money has been released during the week, but it appears to have been either absorbed or remitted horus at the still ruling high rate of sterling exchange. Anyway it bas caused no improvement in rates. Exchange on London 20-11-16, OR Shanghai 71
nominal.
BANKS-Hongkong and Shanghais, with a full in the London rate to £87, 108., bare ruled quieter and the temporary firmuess reported in our inst ins not been maintained. Shures bave been on offer during the work at 8855 without finding buyers, and it is probabla that a kome- what lower rate would bring out sellers. Nationals remain steady at S10 and shares could probably be placed at that rate,
MARINE INSURANCES.-Unions remain uu- cheaged sad without business at 3900, but close with probable sellers at $795. China Traders have changed hands at 3, and later at 967 closing quiet at the latter rate. Cantons have found further buyers at $350 and close with buyers at that. North Chiuse and Laugtszes remain without any local business, and our quotations are faksu from the last Shangbai circulare.
FIRE INSURANCES Hongkong Fires bare ruhd steady and have phauged heads in smul lots at $300, closing stdady it that rate. Chiun Fires are still enquired for in a stall way et $95, but no shares are available, and it is possible that a point higher might be paid were any sharos forthcoming. at the same time the demand is orly small one and when it is satisfied the rate is not likely to improve in the initiate future.
Super-Hongkong, Cantov and Macaos have ruled steady to strong with a demand which has been practically numet at $24 $247, and at time of closing the market is steady to strong at $24, to 824). Into Chinas hare been placed to Shanghai at 3 and close fairly steady at that rate, Douglases coatiun in demand at 840, but shares are still unavail- able. We have nothing else to report under this heading.
REPISERIES-China Sugars show no signs of improvement and we have no business to report, the market closing weak at $190 ex the dividend of $15 paid yesterday Luzons remain unchanged but weak and without business at quotation.

MENING. We have no business or changes report under this heading,
After a largo portion of the men had gained their way to the entrance of this fort, th Mords threw in hand grenades, spears, krises, and barongs which had deadly affect on our troops Lientenant Johnson, who had charge of the signal station, mads au attempt to get into one of those forts and while he was climb- ing to the top of the fort he was shot just above the right lung, and was blown off the parapet by ous of the grenades, down a 30 foot | embankment. This fall would have killed an ordinary man, but Lieutenant Jobusos when last seen was doing well.
Just before the crast was renekdə the men on- countered a terrifle fire through the bamboo tubes, but as contions had proviously been given the man regarding this, the soldiers took care. to keep out of the rage of these primitive bat dangerous weapons, and but few were hurt from that soures. During the struggle to gain the crest of the grater the Moros fought dosporately realizing that upon losing that advantage their resistance wald be practically at an end.
ike a wild bast who is cornered, these Moros became maddened at this stage and with desperate fauuticism jumped from the ridge of the crest over the steep cliffs on to the hears and shoulders of our men, cutting and slashing right and left with their mor derous barongs.
Finally the machine guns which had to ba hoisted by means of ropes and block and tackle. were placed in position on the ridge, when bullets wera pumped into the crater killing everything in sight. Many of the Moros played possuu," and three of the soldiers were killed thinking that the Moros were load. One hospital corps man was killed by a Moro man who was dressed like a woman,
The Morus were determined to fight to a finish which was clearly demonstrated in the fact that during the first night's bironas, when. they must have realiz d what their fate would be, not a man, wozam or child attempted to escape. On the morning of the 8th the foal fort was captured, and the fight was at an end, A number of times during the fight the Morm were given a chance to surrender, but they were determined to fight to the death.
The Moros who were killel were taken onco of by their relatives who were living not far away from the bise of the hill; it was done quietly and without any entrard sign of fesling or resentment.

There is a crater at the top which forms a huge basin. On the southern spur of the crest was erected one of the best fortified of the More forts, and it was there where the main attack was made against the stubborn resistance of the Moros.,
There were 600 American troops against 600 Mores, this of course includes the women who wore as able fighters, and just as dangerous 8 the men
They wore trongars the same as the men, and at a distance it was impossible to tell one from the other. The command was in of Colonel Joseph W. Duncan, 6th Entity, and consisted of the following troops: Four companies 6th Infantry, two companies 19th Infantry, four troops 4th Cavalry, the 26th battery of Field Artillery, about a dozen blua jackets from the gunboat Pampanga and a detachment of 42 constabulary-man, With the naval force there were two Colts automatic guns, and the artillery had one Maxim.
There were three misîn i trails the mountain
up side, and the forces were divided into three columns, one under the command of Major Car Bundy, 6th Infantry, sunther under Captain Tyree Rivers, 4th Cavalry, and the third column was commanded by Captain E ̊F. Lawton, 19th Infantry. In the first fight soon after the ascent began Captain Rivers was wounded and he was ancceeded by Captain Lewis M. Kooler, 4th Cavalry. The trails were so steep that in many places ropes were required for the soldiers to pull themselves up hy. There were three main works of the enemy with 15 to 20 sarias of trenches, and the whole rim wes barricaded with trenches.
On the morning of March 5th Major Bundy, with the constal ulary detachment and two companies of the 16th Infantry, worked thom- lves up the trail, they had to go single. Sile and on their hauds and feet, the trail was so
