China is to-day advancing, industrially, at a rate which is truly astonishing The pose- quence is that there is a good demand for lost all classes of machinery; a demand which promises in reich very large propor tions. There are springing up all over China mills for crushing beans, flour and cotton mills, engineering and steel works, etc., etc. Itailwars, of which little is board at home, are projected and being built; mining for coal and frou is rapidly extending, and copper is attract- ing considerable attention. Mosers. Neumann and Co., of South African fame, lave at present in China a staff investigating the possibilities of copper in Szechuan and Hons, for which purpose the British Honen Syndicate, Limited,. with offices at 2, Salisbury House, London Wall, las been registered. For all these dove- lopatents large quantities of machinery and material are being imported, sad it is satisf tory to - that the bulk of this is of British origin, but it is very unvalisfactory to see that the business is done almost entirely through German houses located at Shanghai, Canton, Haukow, and Tientsin. The fact is, there is not one British merchant house in the whole of Chius in position to laudle large machinery business. Even where the British firms are
