ANNUAL MEETING.
The 18th annual meeting of the Hongkong Benevolent Society was held at the City Hall on Saturday afternoon, when the Hon. Mr. H. E. Pollock presided over a fair attendance.
The Chairtant read the annual report sub. mitted by the ladies of the committes. At the outset the ladies expressed their thanks to all who had assisted in carrying out the work of the Society during the past year. In that period 22 cases were brought under the naties of the committon and in 17 of those assistanca was given. Other eases, numbering over 40, were assisted through the Rev. J. H. France, who had rendered considerable sertion to the
•Society by investigating cases and helping such as were deserving, the Socisty placing $15 per month at his disposal for this purpose. Employ. ment was found in the Colony for some of the applicants and pasnges paid for others to various pleens where they had friends or were
likely to find employment. The Society paid for the ampport na oduction of four orphans at the Disarm Girls' School overy month in One had now finished her education and had obtained employment in the Colony na nursemaid. Twe girls had been supported at the Italian Convent for the year; ona hoy at the French Convert; and one giri partiy supported at Miss Johnstono's, As the funds or the Sociozy were at a very low obb in October Major Chapman kindly consented to the pro- ceeds taken at our of the Vehanteer concerts being given to the Society. Through the kindness of many people and firms, who gener ourly gave their services and bolp, and to the comicilien supporting the concert the funds were increased by the large amount of $1,695. During the year Mrs. Robertson raigued her Place on the committee owing to ill-health, and Mra Dickson bal since actod as president, vice-president, Lady Berkeley continuing as Mis. On the whole, the-sobemo-may be said to have met a roa! nard. A number of men have been enabled by ila maus to keep afloat during what might otherwise have been a period of absolate destite tion, and bave thus had a much better chico of getting employment.
Rev. Mr. HICKLING asked if all the guarantors under the Governor's scheme had been called on during the year.
Mr. POLLOCK understood that ton guarantors
were not.
Mr. HICKLING supported Mr. Pollock's re- marks, but wished to add that no charity should be given to anyone able to work and able to get work. There had been essen during the year of
men able and willing to work, but unable to get it; there was also a caso in which a man why had been assisted not only repaid the money exponded on him, but gave a donation towards Ha thonghi assisting other unfortunates,
taany people who would support there were the Society, but who could not afford to give $12; therefore, they should make it known that they would be pleased to receive smaller amounts.

Another important mattor thought should be brought forward was with regard to the increasing number of destitute Americans who were finding their way he from Manila. It was very necessary that the American community in the Colony should cone forward with sono real assistance towards their relief. When these people endeavoured to call on their own nationals they were turned
