It was title of "De Barnardo's Homes," so that the Dans of the founder may be inseparably asociated with his work. Her Majesty the Queen in a most gracious message of condolenes on the death of Dr. Barnardo, "that great "philanthropist, whose existence was devoted to
forsaken children, prays that his splendid alleviating the sufferings of all poor and
life-long work may be kept up as an "everlasting, tribute to his memory." The Council fool that in this suggestion Her Majesty expresses the feelings of all who have supported the Institutions. A Memorial Scheme is called for; and paraly the most fitting recognition of Dr. Barnardo's unique' services to the State and to bummuity would be the establishment of his life-work upon The Council permanent basis.

No loabs the mottlings and scratchings on the sky, done in developing, account for its subordinate rank in the judges' esteam. The fourth prize picture, as a photo, seems better than any of the others. It is a view in the New Territory; and full of beautiful detail; while ass picture it is dimensionally well balanced and lighted. Close by the same competitor has a picture of water reflecting mountains, with a sampan in the fore- ground, which we liked better than the prize winners. Wo learned from the promoter of the exhibition that the idea in "art" photography is to imitate brash work as nearly as possible. This seems to us a very mistakes ambitior. The camera gives effects (as in Mr. Blake's fourth prize picture) that are impossible with the brush; and the paintings of ablo artists prosent an atmosphere that no mechanical inventioner imitate successfully? It would be batter, there fore, to strive for photography's best, and Thirty-two men were drowned, and esshow "fakes" of towing or development. For

a child in a huge shell, with a background foliage, was no excellent sample of genuine photographic art. It got no prize, we suppose, because it could hardly be classified as a lands espe. Mr. John Blake's photo of a lake is splendid, either as a picture or a photo: but no process could make it look like a painting. It would be foolish to try. In judging painting, we mark how the limitations of the brush have been overcome by the artist, Why should the camera artist seek for more limitations than he already bas? Perhaps the best picture of all, if only it had not been such a miniature, is Mr. Harold W. Merrill's "The V:sta" which proves him to possess the seeing eys. He has discovered a pook which » painter gould not resist. This gentleman alan has exquisite fasta und great originality in mount- ing his pictures. Mr. Th. Pezare has made a pictorial record that will, bo of interest to posterity, in his Ancient and Modern Public Couragances in Hongkong." Mr. C. H. W. Kaw exhibits a breezy yachting-picture, instinct with the bellying sail and hissing prow. There is a fine collection of Japanese snapshots. This is only a sketchy vatline of the more striking features of an exhibition woll worth a visit.

The liabilities now existing may be suchmarised as follows:-- Mortgages, £100,500, Special Lonus, £12,000; Canadisu Liabilitics, £14,000; Tradesmen's Areante, Builders Contracts, Bills Payable, Interest crested on Mortgage, 200, 700; and Overdraftat Hook, £22,800-a total of £249,000.
