London, England, writes: Gentlemen.-I foal I must write and thank you for the great goed my wife is deriving from Dosu's Buckache Kidney Pills. This time last year she was so ill with sciatics and kidney disease that the entirely lost the use of hur limbs, and was unable to stand. I had to carry her about the house like a baby. The doctor said that it 1 did not get her out of London I should not have her very long, so I got her down to Sheerness to some of her relations, who were vory kind to ber. She was wheeled about in a bath-chair for three months, and although the change of alt did her good, she was still unable to walk when she returned tome. I made her a pair of cratches, which improved matters a little, oud at this time a friend advised us to try Dean's Backachs Kidney Pills. I got some for my wife, and she seemed better after the second or third box, so she persovered with the medicine, and ever since then she hasnando gond hardway. She does not got the awful pains in the bock, and she is quite another woman. I have got her 40 boxes of Doan's Pills altogether, and her remarkable cure is the talk of the neighbour

Before instituting a through various causes, comparison of the number of births and destha with other countries, it will be necessary to touch on the subject of marriage. The average annaal assbor of marriages in Japso during the ton years ended 1400 was 374,000, or 878 per 1,000. The only European country which surpasses Japan in the ratio of marriages is Servin, where it is 9.7. Hungary (8.7) and European Itussia (8,G) maintain a ocarly similar ratio with that of Japan. In Germany (82). Austria (8.0), France (7.5), England (5.8), and Scotland (72) the rates are all below those of Japan. Ia short, Japan's ratio of marriages is higher than that of most of the European countries.

It should be borne in mind that in the Japart. official census roturns the still-bero appear first in the birth list and thon in the death consus, white in other countries statistics on this iton are not uniform.. In England for instance, the still-barn are entirely excluded from the birth, and 'death statistics. The same ayatom has been followed in compiling theso Ugures.

A already romarked, the ratio of marriages in Japan is larger than that of most obor countries, and therefore people are naturally had to expect a proportionately larger birth-rate. This, however, is not the case. The average yearly enmber of births during the years tuler review was 1,272,000, or 29.8 per 1,000 of the

We have often heard it said, remerke Me, Takano, that Japan's pupulation is multiplying with remarkable rapidity. Mr. Takuna then proceeds to review the difference between the number of births and deaths. The excess of births over deaths in Japan during the ten years ended 1900 was 36,000 a year on an average, or 85 psr 1,000 of the population. Switzerland (0.3) and Belgium (9.8) come near to Japan's rate, while England, Germany, Austria, and Russia far exered that of Japaz, as will be shown. Even io Seol-ad and Demark, where the rate of increase of population is nearly the same as Japan, the excess of births over deaths is aljove that of this country. The comparative small. ness of the actual increase of population compared with the excess of births in these countries is beesuse they loss a large number of the pop- lation through smigration abroad. Bight of the following statistics the fallagy of the supposition that Japan's population is in- erasing at a rate almost unprecedented in other countries will become apparent~~
