Improvement of the microscope has bean the aim of recent juventors. In the ultra microscope a new method of illumination gives visibility to particles heretofore outside of the line of sight; and in the still later ultra vialul microscope the mode of illumination is chief feature. The second instrument uses light of
wave length of 275, while the shortest wave length not absorbable by ordinary leneen is 550. The difference depends upon the employment of quarts lenses, the soares of light being cadmium electrodes, and the detail obtainable with the short rays is remarkable. The naked oye sees nothing through such microscope, an ovepices containing a fluorescent and screen being accessary to convert the rays make visible a picture of the object in gran. The duorescent screen is only for focusing, however, and the real results are obtained by photography, the plates being very sensitive to the rays from the cadmium electrodes. The results differ much from those of ordinary illusination, some structures bei ug penetrated by the cadmiam rays while others are not.
