REPORT FOs 1904
A HISTORIC SCOTS HOUSE.
The floaucial report and statements for 1901 which were laid before the Legislative Council on August 18th, bear the signature of Mr. J. O. Anthonisz ny acting, transacer. The notwal revenus for the year was $10,746,518, against an outlay sut at $10,848,089 The assols and liabilities give a balance to the credit of, the Colony of $1,654,866 on the 1st January, 1905. The dependencies came to $16,500, being un advance to the Municipality of Malacca.
The cash balance on the 1st January, 1905, excluding the earrener note reserve, has $810,187. This reserve was $11,023,203 The Fuvestments of the Colony at the end of the year wäre £81.627. The difference between the actual price paid and value on 31st December, 1901, amounts to $13,560, which is a difference to the goal. This is entirely due to value in dollars of New South Wales inscribed stock of 1985, which was bought when exchange was high. All other stocks shov a depreciation in respect of their dollar
values,
The actual revenne shows a, deliciency of $1,182,224 when compared with the ostimates, and an iqurease of $2,783,021 over the actual rotenno for 1903. The total transactions for the year, which had been estimated to art in a surples of $410,123, showed an actual deficit of $102,471. This result is due to the consider able reduction in the opium-farm rents amounting to $1,019,000, and to the fact that ne faut sales were effected. The satireate of ravenne from this source was $20,000. On the other hand, a sum of $609,603 is shown as saring but this is mainly due to the non- completion and postponenient of certain public
works.
The actual expenditure was $19,848,989. saving of 8609,630 on the estimates, and un increase of 22,663,086 as compared with the The amount to a expenditure of 1903, covered by the Final Sapply Bill comes to $89,550 as compared with 9778,:20 in 1903. The increase autor works and buildings, special services, is chiefly dust the expenditure on the Malacca-Pulan Sebaug Railway, biz:-894778, and under military expenditure, to large increasó in the estimate of revenue for 1904
No subsidiary silver coin was imported by Government during the year. An excessive Mr. & Mrs. E. M. Mosemount of small coin was returned to the Colony Dr. W. B. A. Moore principally from Hongkong and China. About $153,000 worth of 10 and 20 cent pieces were withdrawn from ciconiation during the year in Singapore.
This was done by allowing the pium farmer to pay a patios of his rent in aubsidiary silver. Now copper coin to the value of $ 4,700 was imported as against $70,500 1003.

From the Glasgow Weekly Herald). The death took place at Callander on Monday (July 24) at a comparatively early ago, of Mi WILL BUY Katharine Elizabeth Buchanan of Leng, Perth- shire, youngest and only surviving daughter of the late John Buchaunn-Hamilton, F. R.S. (led 1903), of Leny, Bardowie, and Spittal, Chief of in 1845 to the Clan Buchanan, by his marriage Margaret, youngest daughter of George Soton, of Cariston, Fifeshire, representative of Mary Beton, one of the "four Maries" who attended ea Mary Queen of Sets The deceased lady, who had been ill for a considerable time, was very popular ia the Callander District, where ale wES closely associated with all deserving schemes. The Bachanans of Lety were a bauch of the Bacbazan was purchased in the 17th coutury rau ancestor of the. Dake of Montrose. In- deed part of their ancient peel, dating from about the 13th century, is still to be soon a short distance from the dual residence at Buchanan. King Robert Bruce took refagent the Castle after bis defont at Daires by the Man- dougall of Loro, and was sutartaited thers by tha tenta Laird, while Sir Alexander Buchanan, chlost son of the twelfth Laird, killed the Duke of Clarence (a son of Henry IV, of England)at tho battle of Beauge, in France. Another Laird foll at Floddon, and a cadst of the family was the celebrated George Buchanan, tater to James VI. The late Miss Buchanan's grandfather was Francis Buchanan-Hamultos, todauther of many
important Indian works, and resognised Chief of the Cha in 1826. He was in the servios
the East Judin Company, and was specially deputed by Lord Wellesley, then Governor General, to travel through and investigate the various countries acquired by the company in the wars with Tippo Sultan. Hamilton's report was a very voluminous one, and is full of much valuable information. It is an interesting
of
fact that the late Miss Buchanan and her bru ther, the proscat Laird of Lory, truce their dee- cent from King Robert Brice throngh the Sir Walter Buchanan, chirteenth marriages of Laird of Buchanas, to Isabel Stuart, daughter of Murdoch, Duke of Albany, and Regent Scotland. The deceased lady's eldest sister died any years ago not long after her marriage to Jardine, first Baronet of Castlemilk, Dum- distinguished Scotsman, the late Sir Robert friessaire, some time 3f. for that County. The Lory charter dates from 1227, and the state was held by symbols so far back as the year 163. The house itself is situated in a romaatio glen near Callander, and wasenlarged and tarreted by Miss Buchavan's father about the middle of last century.
