Severa slectroscopes lately made in tho physics building of McGill University were discharged by natural leakage from 60 to 1000 times as rapidly as similar instruments used in the same building two years before, and this extraordinary leakage continued when the electroscopes were removed to another building. The cause proved to be radio-netivity of the raw materials. Other electroscop-s were misle in the chemistry building from other materials, and discharged at the usual slow rate, and with these it was shown that the emanation from radium bad infectail every part of the physics building, even drawers and closs's, and had im- parted activity to sheets of mica, lead foil, iron zine, tiu and other substances. It is calvulater that if the emanation were now to be stopped by removal of the ralium, the building would contiuns to increase iu radio-activity for two or theres gents, the infection falling only one ball nt the and of forty years. Phosphorescence is still much of a mystery. The glow of phosphorus at ordinary tempora- tures has been variously explained, being thought by soms to be an electrical phenomenon, but a Frouch investigator has now shown that it is mainly or entirely due to the slow combustion of an oride that forms on the aatside and is more volatile than the phosphorus itself.

In plant fording by electric light a foreign grower has found teat red globes produce greater intensity of colour, and yellow globes a more delicate colour.

The arrival in London of a specimen of the bird-eating spider calls renewed attention to a little known fusest that is more powerful than the famona Tarastala. It is the largest spider known, and in its tropical South American home it spins very formidable waks for cat- ching lamming brds and finches instead of flies. When the enormously strong threads are spmu acrom little-frequented roads they often strike the facts of travellers with great violence. The budy of the spider is often three inches long and as large us a ben's egy, and its borrible aspect is increased by the long, hairy legs.

The liver and stomanol work harmoniously together, to change the food we eat, into blood, bono and tissue. The stomach anpplies the gastric juice which digeats the albuminous part of our food; and the bilo from the liver com pletes the process of digestion by auting on the ils and fats. The digested food is then ready for conversion into pare, rich blood. When, however, the stomach and liver are out of order. there is not enough gastric juice and bile formod to completely digest the food and form new blood, and the undigested food wearios and irritates the delicts mechanism,, und clogs the bowels. Dean's Dinner Pit's stimulate the dw of gastric juice acl bile, thas directly siling of digestion and helping in the making of new, 1 fe-giving blood.
