only gold each Fear. they are already considering the bost

of dealing with

owners of mines. Remarkable though it appears of the present they suggest, when their works are in full string and their rontput sufficient, that represan tatives of the principal mines hold a meeting and appoint arbitrators to estimate what the future amount

of profits of each mine available for dividend would be. Tho syndieste would then hand this amount over to them each year, and the mines would be closed down.

A colossal gold trust would thus be formed,

the whole seventy millions sterling worth of gold being supplied to the world yearly by the syndicato in question. A plant capable of bringing about this revolution in gold produc tion will cost, it is thought, about £2,000,000.

CANALS IN CHINA.

There are several features of the canal system of China, especially of the Imperial or Grand Canal, which can be studied with profit by the people of the United States. Ons of those is the use of the canal for the production of food in addition to its uses as a means of transporta- tion. Allied to this is the use of the "muok which gathers at the bottom of the waterway for fertilisation. Another is the use of avery particle of plant life growing in and around the canal for various purposes. The Chinove secure aveat quantity of food of one sort or another from their car

canal, However the water

is supplied to the rice, it is evident that there must be a waterway leading the field and to a principal steam, which is generally a back brench canal. These waterways naturally take up a considerable tion of the land, and the

portion Chinese make as profitable pse of them as of the land itself. The first use of the waterways is for fishing. The quantity of tigh taken from the canals of China annually is immense. Along the canals in Chine at any time may four boatmon gathering muck from the bottom of the canal, and as soon as the boatmen kus a
