ROAD TAUSTA.

The beavy rains make one's thoughts turn to JONì trusts. It in now, if over, a på mut anbject, and we wish we could say the same of the roads themselves. It is the irony of fiste that most of one roads show evident signs of being recently laid by proving more muddy then usual. They are really is goal order, but the rains have caught the committee a little early.

Much good work has been dopo especially in the outlying suburbs, and there is good work in the making.

We are very glad to believe that the Road Trust Committeo take a most broad-ininded viaw of their responsibilities. There are, in our melisighbourhood, many quite narecas. Hary holes and shallow pools which such rains an we have had recently will fill for months perhaps Such prove a veritable hotbed for mosquito breeding, anopheles and othersins. The same applies to one or two Chinese graves

which should be drained or filled in.

ԱՅ

The arrangement which thus comes into oper tion is in pursuance of the agreement made last August, which represents what may be described as a working partnership between the companies and the Post Office.

The whole rate for the transmission of the telegrams-the wireless rate from skip to shore and the postel telegraph rate over the inland fraten--bus teen collected on the ships by the Marconi operators in charge of the stations there. The Marconi operator at the shoro sistion hes, on receipt of a wireless message from a ship, handed it in at the nearest postal telegraph office, paying, of course, the Post Office arges; and the ship station and the shorestation being both under the control of the Marconi Companies, the payment to the Post Office for the land charge has been re-imbursed from

the money collected from the Marconi operator on the ship. When, however, messages had to be transmitted from the elore to the ship, the matter was not so simple. In the first place, the general public had no information of the movements of ships carrying the wireless apparatus, or of the locality of the shore stations through which messages might be sent

Farther, any Marconi telegraph station on a ship was not recognised by the postal telegraph officiala as an address,
