PORTUGUESE KING AND ENGLISH POLICEMAN.
A statement published in some of the London evening papers that the King of Portugal land met with a serious accident inthe West End, where his carriage had been in collision with another vehicle, had a basis which revea's King Carlos in a very oharacteristic light.
His Majesty was walking in the Mall when a hansou cab, the horse attached to which hol taken fright, came carcoring along at a furious tate. Thoro was a sely in the cab, and abe was screaming with terror.
With great smartness a policeman dashed across the roadway and succeeded in stopping the horse. By this time the lady in the cab hat collapsed.
The constable was in a quandary. His obvious duty was to get the lady out of the hansom and into a place of safety, but he dared not, at the moment, release his held of the frightened horse.
King Catlosgrasped the situation in anins of, and, hastening to the roadway, voliered the policeman at the horse's bond and hold the bride until the officer was able to assist the lady aut of the cab..
The lady was a good deal frightened, but other. wise was none the worse for her adventure, a d when the policeman had escorted her to the footpath he returned to relieve the King of his unexpected ebarge.
Dom Carlos addressed a few cheery words to the officer in commendation of his smartness and smilingly resumed his walk as if it were an everyday incident in the life of a king to hold the head of a ruuaway horse.
