But since it might be very embarrassing to put superior military force in evidence everywhere, as a restorative of shattered 216 prestige, that object is sought by enormous expenditure on strategic railways, especially towards the Persian and Afghan frontiers. was lately shown, the 1,10 miles of almost barren and very sparsely peopled country between Orenburg and Taslikend now has a line passing through it for purely military purposes. That is also the unmistakeablo character of the longer.railway extensions to Julia, near the Persian frontier, and from Askabail to the holy city of Moshed. Both were planned years ago, bat their construction went on very slowly until the Russian defeats in Manchuria necessitated a demonstration, What the cost will run to before these useless lines aro completed cannot be estirasted, but in the case of the Trans-Siberian Railway, it is officially calculated that the doubling of the track from end to end will absorb between sixteen and twenty millions sterling.
