The chief usthematical and classical prizes given at the University College School were, if I remember rightly, the Case exhibition and the Cook's prize. It was well known in that year [1873) there were only two in the running viz, Kikuchi ani a certain English scholar, the son of the headmaster of a well-known pro- prietary school in one of the Home Counties. Some few weeks prévions to the examination the latter felt ill and was unable to attoud his lectures. It may be questioned, saya the Clobe, whether the indirect inflation of Russian expenditure Consequent on the Far Eastern war does not exceed that of the direct outlay on the camp ign itself. At whatever cost, the prestige of the huge Empire must be muained, and, if possible, augmented through Asia, lest it should come to he imagined in the conterminous countries that Russia has grown too feeble to be held in dread. But since it might be very embarrassing to put superior military force in evidence everywhere, as a restorative of shattered 216 prestige, that object is sought by enormous expenditure on strategic railways, especially towards the Persian and Afghan frontiers. was lately shown, the 1,10 miles of almost barren and very sparsely peopled country between Orenburg and Taslikend now has a line passing through it for purely military purposes. That is also the unmistakeablo character of the longer.railway extensions to Julia, near the Persian frontier, and from Askabail to the holy city of Moshed. Both were planned years ago, bat their construction went on very slowly until the Russian defeats in Manchuria necessitated a demonstration, What the cost will run to before these useless lines aro completed cannot be estirasted, but in the case of the Trans-Siberian Railway, it is officially calculated that the doubling of the track from end to end will absorb between sixteen and twenty millions sterling.

AWARDS AT THE WORLD'S FAIR ST. LOUIS EXHIBITION,

The question of infant feeding is one of such great importance and Mellin's Food is BO widely employed that parents will be interested to learn that the preparations of Mellin's Food hare again succeeded in securing the highest public recognition of their excellene before the Jury appointed by the World's Fair at the St. Louis Exhibition, U.S.A. This body has awarded the Grand Prize to Mellin's Food over all other infant foods, which is the highest honour granted Gold medals here also been granted for Mellin's Food Biscuits and for Mellio's Food Chocolate, and a silver medal for Lacto," no improved preparation of Melliu's Food with milk. These remarkabla successes point to the unequalled estimate in which the Mellin's Food preparations are held in America, and should serve ze a further recommendation to the public du general as to their sterling value.
