MISSIONARY LABOURS IN
JAPAN.
The following letter to the Times was gader. stood to have been written by a Japanese.
Sir,With roforenes to the lecture delivered by Sir R. K. Douglas, aud reported in your columus on Tuesday, I wish, as a Japanese, to offer one or two remarks concerning missionary labours in my own country, and bog that you will grant me space for that purpose. I am not a Caristian, but I am most tolerant in my víows, ca, indeed, is the nation at large, so that my observations will, I trust, be deemed free from bias. That which Sir Robert has noticed -in connexion with mission work in China I also notice in Japan, as regards the indiscretion that is characteristic in a measure both of the missiouuries theinselves and their converts. By this I allude to their over zoal, which the fruit, I am sure, of the best possiblo intentions, but tends too often to engender suspicion and cause irritation in the minds of the natives of Japan, thus defeating the missionaries' own objects, and hindering the access of their best endeavours. Among other things 1 hare of ute boon assured that they are busily engaged in disseminating anong my country people the idea that to dia by ons's own hand on the battle-feld or on the deck of a warship is under no circumstance whatover permissible. This doctrine is laid down, in fact, in the journals pablished in Japan that are devoted to the spread of hristianity. I am willing to admit that the contention may be fully warranted on the basis of the Christian faith, but it is nevertheless indisputable that the bulk of the Japanese people do not approve of this teaching, and those who seek to inculcato it do so the detriment of their real influence is irreconcilable with the duties of a soklior, and the conclusion reached is, moreover, illogical. | Frankly speaking, we Japanese are no more in a hurry to die than as a rule are Europeans, but we are taught from infancy to recognize that there are things w ich we should vales far above our own lives. And then it is for the majority of my countrymmen exceedingly diffionit. "SCEPTICS" IN THE CHURCH.
There was a remarkable uprising against the regant utteraness of the Dean of Westminster and other clergymen at a meeting held in the King's Hall, Holborn, last month.
The building was crowded, and many a flory word of repudiation and protest fell from the lips of the speakers in the interval between the hymns and pray-we.
The kaynote of the demonstration was strack] in a letter of the Rer. T. Howard, who wrote that in view of what had been racontly said by men io prominent and important positions not only ia the Church of England but by Non- conformists, it seemed that some combined action on the part of God's servants from all denominations was a necessary and silama duty at the present moment.
The Rev. F. S. Webster describol in his letter the interview he had had with the Dean of Westminster.
Expressions of profound disapprobation came from the audience as the chairman (Mr. R. C. Morgan, editor of the "Christian" recalle the language of the rationalists as to distin- guishing between tas carn and the chaff of Scriptare; their statement that Bileam's ass did not speak, and that the story of Jount was a myth.
"We hare even bal a serinon on the ngnosticism of Jesus," added the chairman, amid shouts of "Shanie."
The Rav. Dinsdale Young pointed out that great and brilliant names do not always re- Tremendous present effective argumenta." issues are at stake." exclaimed this soaker passionately. We are not crying Wolf' needlessly. I deple that there is so much scepticism inside the Church, and I wish it were all cleared ont of the Church,

The soft notes of Pastor Spurgeon also joined in the general repudiation. His glorious father had foreseen that day--and was sad.
The meeting was not representative of any particular church, and a bitterniss was manifested against any individual. It was a re-

to an enemy by whom he might, and probably would. be ignominiously treated. The distinc tion is altogether too fine for our comprehension. and, if we accept the dictum that he who may die under anch conditions by his own hand commits The Robe Chronicle in an article on Russia's asiu, then the soldier who advances to the at naval power remarks. While the Baltic fleet tack under an avalanche of fire is equally a man to be condemned. Needless to say, wanton self. is slightly superior to the Japanese in battle. destriction for ignoble reasons is totally reships, it is greatly inferior in cruisers, as will be pugnant to our creed-quite as much so as it is Bean from the following comparative table of in the West-but to condemn, ab initio, every

But pray let it be understood that I do not make this declaration from any dis- position to oppose the Western religion. I am merely desirous of indicating the general trend of the educated Japanese mind, so that there may be no disappointment hereafter, and in order that-so free am I from hiss-the missionaries may the better by able to judge of how they should deal with my country people, in order that they may avoid causing needless irritation or producing misunderstandings that would be little calculated to improve their prospects or promote the higher objects that no doubt they have at heart. To me it seems that there are tenets of modern Christianity and which are not essential to its pare original form as expounded in Galilee, and which it is neither absolutely essential nor politie for missionaries to enforce. It would be more discreet of them to adapt themselves to the real needs of the country they visit, and it was in this sense that I ventured at the outset to refer to their indiscretion. I will give a: homely little illustration of what I mean. On a certain day in avery year it is the custom in my country for the fanetionaries in the various schools and colleges, high and low, and likewise the students, to assemble in the principal hall and bow, in heartfelt reverence, before the pro- trait of the Japanese Emperor. I will not attempt to dray paralicis, though plenty could be found, even in the Occident, for this enstom -sach us the raising of the hat while the National Anthem is being sing. Suffice it to say that it is no more an actor "worship" than is the respect everywhere paid to European Sovereigne. But it has happened in Japan that a native teacher in a school took the opportunity presented by the occasion to openly refuse to bow his head in the cas. tomary manner before the Imperial photo-
ground that, having em graph, on the Frased Christianity, he could no longer do so, for he ought to reverence nothing but God. If this was the result of Christian teaching, it seems to me to have been downright mischievous and an exhibition of extreme narrow-aninded- ness infinitely to ho deplored. There is surely much room for improvement in the missionaries methods, and, as I claim to be sufficiently broad- minded to be thoroughly impartial, I hope that what I have ventured to say will not, on their part, be taken antiss. At all events, I am glud that attention should have been called to the subject, and especially if Sir Robert Douglas's lecture should awaken interest in it anew, though, of course, the antagonistic spirit which he aptly describes as existent in China is by no means prevalent in Japan, where perfect free dam of thought is secured by the Constitution, and, moreover, the anti-foreign sentiment is absolutely non-existent.
Apologizing for the intrusion and enclosing my card,
Iam, Sir, your obedient servant,
