The imports of Ceylon tea into Holland rose from 5000 lbs, to 23,000 lbs. in 1903, though the greater part of the tea drunk in that country still comes from Java. In Belgium and Switzerland consump- tion has made great advances; in Spain, Portura), and Austria it is increasing steadily, though

Germany, though it cannot yet be called a ten-drinking country, is the third largest market on the Continent. There is a prejudice in favour of Russing tene, so German dealers put up Indian and Caylon tes in wrappers printed in Russian characters. and sell it as Russian. Of all the countries of Europe, however, Russia is the great fea con- sumer, and in spite of wor, adverse tariffs and competition, takes more and more British. grown tea. But there is no real fear that they will give up the straggle. They havo conquered all difficulties hitherto, and will do so again. At the present time the continent of Europe seems to be the most promising field for their efforts. We believe that the introduction of thoroughly gcod British-grown, tes, hacked by stuady up. to.date advertising, will produce as good effects in Europe as it has done in America. There ill be a good opportunity for advertising British grown tea at the Interational Exhibition which is to be held at Lioge next year. Another market, which seems to be waiting for the British planter to exploit it, is Thibet. The 1615] Thibetans are said to be a nation of tea- drunkards, and the toa they get at present is mostly coarse refuse from China, made into bricks. The demand is so great that any tea is readily accepted. If British grower will manufacture tea to suit the Thibetans in bricks if necessary, bat good sound well made tea, they will have a market for their common teas at their own door and be able to send their best to London and, as a writer in one of the Indian papers remarks: The bogey of overproduction will vanish for ever."
