THE RUSSIAN ARMY IN THE

FIELD.

The war correspondent of the Paris Journal, writing from Linoyang, made the following interesting observations: "If you could sound consciences and penetrate the secrets of men's minds you would doubtless discover that nine out of every ten of the Russian officers would be very glad to retorn at once to Russia. But

know that if a man belongs to a collective body his persouul feeling disappears and gives place to that of the body itself. That is what is called esprit de corps. Russian officers are too proud, their collective amour Toure is too great, for them to admit the iden of a discence - El peace, and they would consider as such any peace concluded after a defeat. But as soon as a great victory has been obtained, as soon as the prestige of Russian arms has been restored. I do not think that a single Russian officer would protest against a treaty of peace taking Japanese ambitions largely into consideration,. Some of the Russian officers, and not the least famous of them, do not hesitate to declare that in their opinion when the Russian army is victorious the best thing it can do is to restore Manchuria to China. The programme openly advocated by many is to sell to the Chinese Empire the railways and ports which Russia
