CRICKET.

PROBABLES T., POSSUDLES,

On Saturday the last of the practico gama that have been arranged between the players of the Hongkong Cricket Club with a view to selecting the team that is to do duty or the Colony on Friday next against Shang hai was held. There were six certain starters in the Probables team, but Houth, and Arthur were not able to take part owing to the former having slightly injuret his aukk awl the latter aot having job returned to the Colony. The andinace was most enthusiastre and several encores were given. The concert was brought to a close with the Britisk National Arthen.

I do not wish to be hypereritical, but I do not like the colours in which the new Cricket Pavilion is dressed. Af any rate let the roof be a darker tint: either a nice chocolate or maroon brewn or black. It would contrast Itter with the gay tone of the stewed walls.

In what bauer, I should like to knew, de the Peak Tramway Company's engineers pro- jose to get down to Queen's Road! It would, of course, have been simple if the now Provost Prison had not been built and the Military Authorities would have granted a slice off the western boundary of the Marry Barracks, -and by cutting down all the trees ou the castorn side of Garden Road. But now it is more difficult, and the only way in which it seems possible to any unpressional eye, is to run it on an over- head track something like the overhead railway- at New York, only less demonstratively ugly, I remember seeing some time back illustrations of street railway in Berlin wher appearances had been consulted, and the result was not at all unpleasing. Bat, however the cars are to be brought down to Queen's Road, by all means let them comne.

When the excellent Band of the German cruiser Handa was permitted early in the gear to play in the Public Gardens there was no mistaking the popular appreciation of this action on the part of the authorities, who for many years past had declined to permit Bus playing in the Gardens because of the damage which experience had proved was done to the sarahs and flowers under cultivation. This bus always seemed to me an absurdly inadequate reasen for denying to the whole community the enjoyment of good music in an casily accessible as well as a most delightful location. Annoy aures by hobbledeloys are easily to be pre- -vented. Occasional performances by the military bands would be geria'u to attract scores of residents who do not now visit the Gurdens oner a year, and tlie would result in a much kcener and wider public appreciation of this charming spot, which, as the hill slopos are rapidly being covered with bricks and mortar, becenes of over-increasing value to the Colony The autonucement that the Band of the Sher. wood Foresters will play in the Gardens this alternoon from 3 to 5.30 is gratifying to they este day over Course No. 8 (11 miles), is

The privilege of constructing this line will thus still remain in the hands of Americans as originally fatened by the Chinese-und he will very likely obtain the Government's consort, in view of the agitation now going on in Canton, where there is strong opposition amongst the gentry and wealthy merchants in the South against giving the construction of the line into the hands of Belgians.
