The electro sterilizator of M. Otto is an at tempt to solve the problem of ozonizing water at the home of the consumer. The apparatua includes a little box containing a transformer and an oz natur, with a commutator for re- versing about 100 times per second if the or ront is continupas. The ezonator may be connected tojan ordinary light- ing circuit, and the currant required is about the same as for a simple incandescent lamp.
A simple method of recording a ship's course is that devised by Mr. W. Whitomen. The -pass is provided-with-300-electric contacts, and is connected by nine wires with a register ing apparatus, in which a strip of paper is moved forward one millimeter every second by clock work. The paper is ruled with 360 lines, one for each degree. The registering pea always indicates the degree toward which the compass needle is pointing, and the line drawn shows the extent and time of every change of direction.

To illustrate the vast scope of the work the Chalmers Vocabulary contains about 16,000 Chinese Dictionary about 100.000 whilst this Chinese characters, and Medhurst's English and work contains more than 50,000 English words and 29ards of 000,000, Chinese character Again, despite all the grammars and other elementary works as yet published, the student of this difficult language absolutely requires ex- amples to display the various applications and equivalents of different words which have one general meaning. Of these examples this work contains more than five times as many as any other Dictionary hitherto published.
For practical purposes the arrangemout of the work is so complete that a reference to its pages enables a person who understands English to communicate effectively with natives who under stand nothing but Chinese.
