A word to the DPW. The flight of stone steps opposite the Queen's Road entrance to the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, and which leads th Battery Puth and St. John's Cathedral, is much med and should be kept decant. The steps might be kept much cleaner, and the unsourry front would be the Leiter for a coat of paint or colourwash. At present it is allowed to be used as a hoarding for unsightly bills, which are postel there without let or hindrance, and mich portion of the wall as is not thus concealed has a blotchy eruption from damp ON mildew. Its conspicuong position, fronting the finest building in the Colony, alone ought to secure for it a little attention from the Public Works Department.

...C, v. UNITED SERVICES.
A Rugby match, Hongkong Football Club 2. the United Services, was played at Happy Valley on Saturday. The teams were as follows:--
As a lady said to me yesterday:This is so suddon. Why didn't they start three weeks ago, and put the clocks on a minute each day? Then we wouldn't have noticed it so much." Which just shows, us the youngsters say, how little women understand things. There are real grievances, however. The result of the town, lock being pushed on in the night is that, as I went to bed at the usual time on Saturday night, and the clock was put on early in the morning. I lost 23 minutes and 18 seconds of my sleep. That

Professor Huxley says that half an forwards. hour's sleep before breakfast repairs more tissne and restores mors nerve force than three caps of such cuffes as they give you în Hongkong.
Then, in the name of the hundreds of suffer ing employees, why should that 23m 18s. be taken off the tiffin hour? Of course, it happened en a Sunday, but many (for their wins) have to break the Sabbath at least once a week in the way of business, and a man who wont to tilfin at noon sterday had to hurry through the fruit and coffee becuase the new regime made it one o'clock at 19.87. The thing is nopatipable, you must admit.
This morning (I'm writing before my barber comes, of course) I am willing to bet that. I don't get a share. The barber always comes panetually at the last miante, and as he awas a watch which (fiks all watch owners) bo believes before any other horologe in the Colony (good word, horologe) I suppose I'll have to face the editor with a dirty chin. The first ordinary general mesting of the shareholders of this Company was held at BEFORE Shanghai on October 25th, The following gentlemen were present -- Mocars. W. H Ponte (Chaisu su), J. N. Jameson, A. McLeod W. D. Little, W. Meyerink (Directors), B. C, T. Gray (Secretary), W. H. Anderson, W Nation, J. Stenhouse, H. A, J. Mucray, J. M. Young, Qua Sarg, C. S. Moore, and M. Wolff. The Secretary, Mr. B. C. I. Gray, road the notice convening the meeting.
The Chairman, Mr. W. H. Poate, said that tho report and secounts having been in the shareholders' hands for some time would, with their p rmission, be taken sy read. The business before the meeting was to pass the report and sccounts, to approro of the declaration of the dividend and of the placing of a sum to the reserve fund. Tho pocounts for 1903 had also to be closed and the directors and auditors bud to be elected and their remuneration
fixed. The favourable ontturn of underwriting for 1903 enabled them to propose a considerable ‹ audition To the reserve fuad, and this appeared to the directors to be of the utmost importarce. It would be seen that while according to their last report the paid-up capital was £12500 and the reserve fund £42,00, the position, if the directors' proposals more carried out, would be:-Paid-up capital £50,000 and reserve fund, about £10,600, a much more satisfactory state of affairs from the shareholders' point of view. Advice had been received that the final meeting of the old Company would be held in London during December next, to receive the report of the liquidators, Messrs. D. Macie ‹n and W. H. Dalgleish, and he felt eare, the shareholders would desire to record their thanks to these gentlemen for service rendered. Before putting any resolution he would be glad to wor Buy questions.
There being no questions, the following resolations were put to the meeting and carried ausimously --
