Inabanturing letter published in the Daily Press last week a correspondent incilentally set up a defence of flippancy in the debates of our Legislative Council by quoting the report that a rising politician recently irreverently exclain
"Rate" by way of commenting on a state- ment which was being made by a Minister in the
House of Commons, and tho remark was allowed
to pass without a dignified reproof from the chair. Theroby hangs a talo amusing mough to secure space in this columu. The joke is that the hon. member was not guilty of theirreverence some of the reporters charged him with. What Experience has he actually exclaimed was: dissipated those predictions. Some of the reporters who are not so advanta eously placed in the press gallery as tho Hwaard and the Times mon indistinctly bourd the remark, and decided amongst themselves that its purport was * Rats," and so it appeared in several of the newspaper reports. Mr. Charcbill was gravely rebnked in the press for the use of this undig nied observation, and has had therefore to decend himself. While he does not quarrel with an ingenious paraphrase, he takes, he says, the strongest objection to this form. Unofficial members of our own Council must
not therefore model their style on this example, One moral to be drawn from the incident in the advisability of seating, reporters where they can Jar wbut is spoison. I have seen a few amusing instances of this nature in Hongkong.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE "DAILY PRES§.”
SIR,--- Taipan's" letter in your issue of Saturday last is a ri, htuous outburst against an attempt to level the white worker to the plans of the Chinuman by curtailing his time for rooreation. Confinement in a store, attend. oing the wants of a very Bault class of customers from 8.30 am, to 5 p.m., is quite long enough; audi a little healthy outdoor recreation is an essential bothrom the employee's and the employer's viow point, as better equipping the employco for the next day's work.
And with, approximately. 50 lights burning at a cost of, say, 88,50 for the hour, the dollar, or thereabouts, trade that has been done each Groning up to the present proclaims the sehene a failure.
