Because he let his sense of humour get the upper hand, this oratorieul Ajax drew down upon himalt, not only the official light nings, but the chilly displeasure of those whose enuse he championed. I feel sorry for him, for his only sin was that he didn't copy Dogberry and regard the Legislative Assembly as a Public Dissembly.
Now, dropping the criticism, let us look at the reply. If the Hon. R. Shewan's attack en officialdom was not woll done, officialdo's reply was no letter. Evidently the Colonial Secretary was caught off his guard. The restitution to liberty of these wretched men is in itself sufficient to justify our advance to Thassa. The same morning we formally released the Tibetan prisoners, seventy-six wild. long-haired men, with ornamental charma to which they still attribute efficacy. They were- an nusartial-looking crowd, and simple and honest in appearance, more pleasing than the common degraded type of monk of the Lassa monasteries. “We soon perceived ahead of us to yur right, about eight miles to the north, a Japanese squadron of armored craisers, which was hold ing a parallel corrse with us. was not noticed in time, and as our speed had now increased to seventeen knots, it seemed highly probable that we would succeed in our intention, but in less than five minutes the Ruri loft the line and hoisted the signal:
Stoering gear vot working."
I accordingly signalled to her to steer by means of her engines and to keep on in our course. Not receiving a reply to that signal, and greing thatall the Japanese cruisers were concentrating their fire on the Barik, all my subsequent manevres had the sole object of affording her an opportunity of repairing her damaged steering goar, by drawing on myself the whole of the enemy's fire in order to cover the Rurik.
At this moment we noticed two other second and third-class cruisers coming up to join the enemy. The signalI cannot steer was then hoisted on the Burik. Manourring in front of her, I gave her an opportunity of retiring in the direction of the Corean coast, then two miles distant.
"About sight o'clock the signal to make for Vladivostock was 'hoisted. This the Rurik repeated, and held on the desired course, the wave raised by her bew indicating that she was steaming at great speed. She followed in the wake of the cruisers Rossiya and Gromovoi towards the north-west, fighting all the time with the enemy, who beld a parallel course at n distance of 24 cable lengths from us.
