An interesting piece of ancient engineering is reported by H. Dont as still in use in Ver- sailles. It is a cast-iron water main, which has total length of 15 miles, and which dates from 1664 to 1608. The pipes are of two sizes, 20 and 121 inches in diameter and 1 inches und' inch in thickness. They are in lengthe of 40 inches, coupled by means of flanges und bolts, and the only repairs have consisted in replacing the bolts at long intervals.

Sugar has been used for extreme emaciation by M. Toulouse, a Frouch physician, with some what unexpected results. It was given, as an addition to ordinary diet or milk diet, and in quantity ranging from 1 to 10 ounces per day. The patients gained in weight from the begin. ning of the treatment. The increase was often more than the weight of the anger, and averaged 32 ounces per day, while it sometimes reached Found or more. Some patients were 75 or 100 ponads bauvier at the end of a few months. No gastric fermentation or disorders of digestion were set up, as theory would lead one to expect would be the case, and sugar was proven to have great value as a remedy for omaciation, eve" with impaired digestion.
