"Where?" But in the same leath I ex- claimed, "Ah!" for I saw it: a motionless, shadow just under the eben gleam of the water, about fourteen feet long a shark! I know it the instant I determined its outline, and my blood turned into ico.

I thought he was in a fit. He was fully dressed as he had been when he leaned upon his spade, and talked to us before we had gone to the cave, whence I judged be had been lying there all night, and this idea entering my head persuaded me that he was dead. He lay on his face, and I was obliged to turn him partially over to see him. Never was death more plainly inscribed on the human contenance. He lay in the pouring sunshine, which was shocking, and I knew auless baried he would speedily

One day, after we had been married three weeks my little wife comes to me from her hower where she slept now just the same as bo fore, overy afternoon. Labited for a swim, and taking my cheeks in her bends, which was her pretty prattling, artless way when she pleaded, she says to me!

"Haven't I had anough of caves in this -island 2 said I laughing.
You swim almost as well as I," she cries, for you may suppose by this time we had with the full approval of the father made trial of our several arts in the water; and if you chose to practice you could dive and keep down like the people whom father describes as seeking for pearls under the sea:
I did not need much coaxing. I had made up any mind to take a view of this wonderful cavo of hers.
The hour was about five o'clock. Captain Scott was leisurely engaged in his garden. The lay was very tranquil: indved daring the weeks I had been in this island we had not once ex- perienced a breeze that rose to any weight. I want to my room to prepare for the sou, feeling no longer uneasy about sharks.
When Captain Scott saw us passing he leant upon his spade and called out to know where we were going.
To visit Eulalie's cave." I answered. He shook his head and said. Take heed of the giants there! There's no rope to haul you ap with if you can't get out."
I am with him, father, cried Callie, He shook his head again, and fell to digging or to whatever he was at, and we walked on.
We trod the path, which you will remember I took when I followed her that day she dived and hid herself in the cave and terrified me.
"Now," says my sweet girl," I will dive first, and when I am in the water throw me the and of this line, and jump after me, helling the rope. I want, te be quick that the water may not soek my torel."..
*
"Where is the exact situation of the entrancs of the cave?" I asked peering over the edge of the rock.
-There," said che, pointing to a part that was quite close.
"Now dive and I'll follow." Right," says I. Sho sprang into the water, and when she reappeared. I love the end of the line to her, and keeping it in any grasp, took a header into the set, and emerged close alongside of her.
"Now." says lie, "dive in the place where I do and I will pall you through easily."
She swam three or four strokes and I fol. lowed: she then dived, but in a fustion I never could understand. Her hgure rose to the hips in the water. and then corrig gracefully she buried herself as the swan does its head. I aired after her, and feeling the gaidanics of the live. found myself alinost in an instant in the orifice, and in less time than I could count iwenty, I rose inside a huge cave with Eulalie by my side. Everything was dim as in a vision of the night, and she was laughing as she swam beside me, in her rich, deep singing notes, which seemed to fill the hollow, soench place with music. Wo swam together towards soxas shelv ing rocks at the extremity of this sea hall, facing the opening, and baring gained them we climbed a few paces and seated ourselves.
At first, and perhaps for a minute or two, I experienced a slight difficulty in breathing, but the trouble passed.
"Oh, come ashore, come ashore," I shunted. You have done your work: the creature cannot live!"
As though this was gaessed by her, sho swam to the rocks more rapidly than the fish could have followed her, and springing to my side. sat down, and lay against u breathing short and sharp.
By the time slis recovered herself it was night in the cave. The blackness had come in on a sudden, like closing to the shutters of a window. This signified the setting of the sun, and the decay of the blue light in the orifice, which was the only illumination the eave received. Eula- lie, who lenned against me. was invisible. "We are kere for the night." said I. She caressed me for auswer. After a little she says

I know not whether I suffered more when I crouched on the ledge throughout the night, than now sitting, and keeping a bittor black watch in this cave through endless uterual hours, as they sered to me, with Eulalie in my arms, and nothing soauding in this vault but her delicate breathing against my ear.
Eulalie put me to shame. She would awake. and speak to me in se placid, sweet a note, shu could not have spoken more calmly bad she been safe in bed above. She seemed to know no fear, I believe the dread-the intense blackness would have caused her was removed by my presence. When we gained the shore, I stood to take a view of my wife. I was territed at first sight: har white attire was stained with bbod, and this with her fair skin and bronze hair made her u ghastly figure. I found, however, that she was without a scratch.
She was very eager to see her father, that he might know we were safe, and we scrambled We entered through the quickly up the rocks. windows of the dining room, but saw nothing of Captain Scott. "We want more light." says I. Those columns hang from the roof and are natural growths, and I expect in the sun they would glow in glory."
Light the torch," says she. "It is my idea. I never did see this place lit up by a torch."
Now was revealed a strange scene at dancing shadows: colours I will not call thom, and yet the light of the torch striking upon those haug ing colymus seemed to paint them as though they were encrusted with jewels of a hundred different hues. All these fantastic lights, com- pacted in pillars, quivered anul trembled, and the dark motionless floor of water mirrored the un- arthly illumination. "If you'll get breakfast I'll make a suroko.. There is no good in shouting. For all we know he may be bunting for us on the south side of the island."
All the time that Eulalie, was busy with pre- paring breakfast. her anxiety about her father kept her restless. She was constantly stepping out, first on this side, then on that of the house to see if he was coming. I felt no uneasiness, told her that he had missed us all night, that he was not likely to seek us in the dark, but that he had a gone ahunting at daybreak.
Would not he take the boat, and look for ds in the cave ?" said Eulalie. He know that wo weat there."
