It will be remembered that he had been found, at the suggestion of Mr. Josiah Lagden, at a place which did not look in the least like a surgery; let it he ad. mitted at once, for the purpose of this history, that he was no doctor at all, and had no right to the title.

With these words. Mr. Clement Frith wout ont of the room, closing the door behind him sharply. He had really managed to evade difficult questions ruthor neatly; and he began to wonder how best he could employ that sudden windfall of one hundred pounds which had come to him and began also, incidentally, to built certain castles in the air castles which were afterwards to be constructed in a more solid form, by the aid of those six figures about which the dealer had spoken so comfortably.
Meanwhile, Mr. Nathaniel Sime hul gone out He was ab. of the house, meditating revenge. solutely certain in his own mind that the girl and the father, between them, had outwitted him, and were in possession of the diamond; at the same time, he did not quite know how to set about getting it. The mere fact that the belief existed in his own mind that the thing was in the house carried him no further; he was un nearer to any satisfactory solution of the business than before. It certainly occurred to him that he might, after darkness had fallen, manage to get back into the house; but, even then, there were many rooms in it, and the diamond was small, and easy to hide; in fact, in all probability, either Mr. Clement Frith er his daughter carried the thing about with thein.

It is probable that, had the man been given a fresh chance, he might have done well. But his occupation was gone; he had grown helpless, hopeless, and desperate. The crowning point of all the miserable business was his meeting with Lagden.
Josiah Lagden was “an old hand"; evory prison in England wes a home to him; he knew the business Lackwards. Ho went into prison, and out again, and in again, units in the ordin ary course of events. He was lucky if he kept out; it was a very ordinary accident if he came to be convicted, and get in again..
He knew how to communicate with Simo, by those signs known only to old priscuers. Work ing on the roads at Portland, he managed by signs and whispers to get into communication with the other man; recognised in him one of superior education, who might be useful. Simo, for his part-embittered against the world, and feeling himself to be an enteast--had no hesi tation in joining forces with the other.
It happened that their sentences expired at about the same time; two of the great outcast army of the world, they marchini shoulder to shoulder from that day onwards. Now and than one would disappear for a space, and then perhaps the other; but they always came to- gether, for however brief a time, in the end.
