CHESS NOTES.

BY XY. Z

Very little has been happening in local Chess ciralos lately; 'n faot which must be the present writer's excuse for the disappearance of "Chicas Notes" for a considerable period. Last Wednesday, however, there was an interesting match at the Chesa Club, Mr. G. A. Woodcock getting together a te im to most the Club's "A" team-practically the Club team with the four top playera barred. . In addition, the visitors inoladed in their rauks one Club member, Kr. J. H. Komp, who won his game. The result of a close match was a win for the Chos Chib by 3 games to 2. The following was the score, the pages being arranged alphabetically in the winners' list :-

From sa investigation of the Sydney plagas. epidemic of 1002, Dr. A. Thompson concludes that both this and previous epidemios were undoubtedly spread by rata. Just how this was done has been a matter of mach, doubt; as to the theory that fleas were the carriers it has been objected that the species of fleas living on. rats do not bito man. The question seems to havo been settled by the discovery that one, epociea-Palex serraticeps-is cominion to man, rats, and other amimals,"

Settlement of the tropics by Europeaus is pronounced impracticable by P. Hasppe, an eminent authority, who finds that only the strongest become enclimatised, and they svou degenerate.
