The bydrobion of Dr. N. von Lorens, of Marienbrun, Austria, greatly simplifies the carriage of live fish. The apparatus is placed at the bottom of the tank of water, and it consists of a cylinder of compressed oxygen, with protecting grilla, regulating valve, and perons oplinder through which the gas is slowly diffused into the water. The supply of oxygen is easily adjusted, as the inventor has calculated

all, ara stationed within the area. The position is manifestly an impossible uns. If the Chin- ose are sufficiently civilisod to be deemed worthy of receiving foreign Ambassadors, it seems hardly consistent to protect the represen tatives of friendly Powars with walls and guards; while, on the other hand, if walls and guards are necessary, the envoys seat sadly out of place. The fact is that the Legation area was fortified in a great hurry, shortly after the relief, when there were so many soldiers there Ba to render such a step quite needless, and that people are now, on calmer refeo fon, beginning to realise that the whole thing is somewhat of an error. You cannot negotiate for user from IF YOU HAVE ACQUIRED A TASTE FOR behind a stone wall, with hundreds of soldiers to support your requests if necessary, with a nation No one need, with whom you are supposed to be on a font- ing of peace and equality. therefore, be surprised to see the Legation Gaurds at Poking gradually reduced to moro nothings. That this will be a mistake is quite possible, for, if it does not open the door to a repetition of the events of 1900, it will, at all events. make the Western nations look some wast foolish, as having built a wall and then withdrawn the mon from behind it. The thin end of the wedge would.seem to have been inserted already by the bricking up of the loopholes in the defensible wall, lest constaat gazing at them should offend the suscepibilities of the Chinese! The wodge was pushed a little farther in when the howitzers belonging to the British garrison were sent away. So it will go on; but who can say what the whole wedga will open ont? It seems impossible to deal with China without making many mistakes, but it would be the better if these mistakes were all on the side of safety, and if, until they have roved that the contrary is the case. Europe continue to treat the Chinese as only half- civilised. A recurrence of the events of 1900 will probably be best guarded against by a sort of armed neatrality such as now obtains, dis- tasteful as this may be to Ministers and Chinese
under the name of "synesthesio."
Alfred remarkable case reported by Dr. Ulrich, of Zurich, the senses seam to have been all involved at once. A boy of nervous tempera- ment, who developed epilepsy in his thirteent's year, had always hoard coloured sounds, different sounda of the voice and the cries of animals boring each its obaracteristic colour. The Bounds of the roweis gaveespecially vivid colours, A being light green, E yellow, I black, O red, U dark gree, sad. Y white. Some sounds gare also sauɛations of taste, of temperature and of form. Sensations of form were associat- ed with colour and sound; smells bad colours; tastes bad colours; and colours hail tests and temperature. Cold was green, and heat was red. False teeth as firmly fixed in the gums as natural ones are claimed by Dr. Zaureusky, a Russian dentist, as a solution of a difficult problem. The teeth-which may be of gutta-alike, percha, porcelain, or metal-have boles at their roots, and they are sat in natural or artificial o vilies in the jaw. The teeth are soon fired firmly in place by a gradually hardening growth into the holes. Several operations on humen brings as well as on doga are reported to have
been successful.
