It appeared that defendent early in the month asked for his ortificates, under the pretext that his late master had returned to the Colony, and if he showed his certificate he thought his late master would give him a better one. Asked if he intended to leave, defendant
said "No."
In evidence it was proved that he was ou duty on the 14th inst., but failed to appear on the 15th inst., leaving his gate auprotected. It was subsequently discovered that the defendant had taken service at the Naval Yard.
Defendant said he left because part of his wages requined unpaid. This was proved in oridence to be untrae, and His Worship fined him $50, with the alternative of 1 month's im prisonment, as a deterrent.
KIDNAPPING.
Inspector MoNab prosecuted a boarding. bouse keeper, named So Lam, residing at No. 11, Reinsaker Street, and 4 other men who reside at No. 376, Queen's Road West, for decoying and enticing away from the lawful possession and care of their guardians two boys, aged respectively 12 and 13 years. Mr. Looker, of Messrs. Deacon, Leker and Deacon, seliai- tors, appeared on behalf of the first defendant. The boys had been taken to the house of the third defendant, and there dressed in now clothes, and taken ou bourd the Lightsing for the purpose of being taken to Singapore. After hearing ericence on both sides His Worship wid that there was not enough evidence to connect the first and eccord defendante with kidnapping, and they were accordingly dis- charged. The third defendant was sentenced to 6 months hard labour and 6 hours in the stocks; the fourth and fifth defendants being sentenced to 3 months' hard labour and 6 hours in the stocks.
