HONGKONG JOTTINGS.

We have bad during the past week in the corn-spondence columns of the Daily Press discussion on something in the nature of a religion Lulu ation. It has often appeared to me that more toleration is shown in religious Far Eastern communities affairs in those than one can meet with in any other part of the world. We had a striking instance of this in Hongkong only a few days ago. Where else in the world may we witness thespectacle that one www at the Bazaar held by the French Romas Catholle sisi ars this week, when nearly all the stallholders were ladies prominently associated with either the Cathedral or the Union Lhurch? It was a practical illustration of the fact that while fa medosof faith we may lisagree, in the great concern of charity all may co-operate on the best of terms.

There has been a good deul of pablis ocament on the recent ro-introduction of the stocks as a punishment for criminals in Hongkong. What- prer may be said for or against them ne au officacious instrumeat for striking terror inte the bearts of evildoers, there is no doubt that our Senior Magistrate helisves in them, much so thal several now pairs have had to o mude of late to meet the polics requirements, But if the stocks bave come to alay, there is one direction in which they could be made moro irksome to misdemeananta. The other day I Haw thre: coolies carrying stocks down from the Contra' to be placed in the low-lying streets where the offonders were to be exponod. whik, the offenders themselves walked alongside Why not make the criminals unburdened. bear their own stocks ?

The poverty of the house on the first night of the A.D.C's performance last week was ingloed to be regretted, and obviously had its effect on the players. What the cause was it is impossible to say, as on Saturday the theatre was full to averflowing. Friday is a bad night to open on even though no mail may be going out next day; and tas A.D.C. would have been wiser to have selected Saturday. The house is bound to be good on a Saturday night in Hongkong, and thus the play guts an encouraging send-off, which was not the case this time. It is not my provises to criticise the performance, but I certainly agree with the praise awarded to the A little more local amateurs for their efforts. luug-power was all I could wish them.

Those bracing days we have bon enjoying recently have brought walking-parties again into rogue. Especially on Bandaya-no doubi. to the detriment of church-going-people talks the opportunity of getting away into the Naw Territory of climbing over the tights of the Pruk to dip down on the Aberdeen side of the island. A much-travelled gentleman, wel known in Hongkong and Londen musical circles, once said in my bearing that there was Bospest in the world which bad so many beautiful walks as Hongkong, and that of all these the walk from the summit of the hill to Aberd was the most beautiful. It well deserved this description. Bat now unfortunately its glory bas departed. The valley dowa whose side the 1 meters has been mails a dumping- grand for rubbish from the Pask, and the crowd of carrion hawks that continually floats over the locality tills its own rio.

I wonder how long it will be before the Jubilee Road will have a commercement of a suitable kind-or, ind: , of any kind at all. At. present it begins under the Kennedytown Hos. pital, in a plot of weste-land littered with straw gin, and generally with some piles of refuse burning. This is supposed to be Hongkong's carriage road! It begins us if it led into a farmyard of a particularly untidy sort. Yet it is nadoubtedly a five and pistaroque road after the unsightlystarling point is passed. Presumably that loggard among departments, the 'T.W.D., is responsible. In Hougkoog it woull seen to bo

Bat of games of their own they have a great lack. I have seen thom playing at a sort of peg-top and at pitch. end-toss: These are exceptious, however. The only game that appears to be held in general favour among them is shuttlecock without the battledore, the place of the latter being supplied by the foot, with the insole of which the shuttle- cock is kirke into th air from one player to the other. Even "grown-ape” indulga in the pastime by times, and a good player is always sure to get an admiring rowd of apen’atere, no matter what the time or place."

The spell of warmer weather after unusually early winter cold here is onriously paralleled by what we read in the latest home papers of the weather there a month ago, when a period of i higher temperatures succeeded cold. But there Wat some rezyon for the change there; indeed it was a regular phenomenon of the approach of winter at home, and in old England it and to be known as All Ballows Soumer." Perhaps Home of my readers who were present at laat week will recall the allusion in King Mr. Hannibal Williams's recital at the City Hall Farewell Henry IV, for does not Prines Hoary, when Lidding good-bye to Falstaff, say, thou latter spring!
