gradnally in a bucket of water and keeping it there until the top of the soil shows the firer trace of dampness, when remove the pot from the water, as the remainder of the soil will become damp by capillary attraction. Afterwards water the pots in the same way, when requirod, unti the plants are big enough to transplant. Waters. ing from the top of the pot would be almost sies to wash all the spores away, as they are so very minute. The pate containing the spores should be kept in a moist atmosphere and shaded from the sna. In about two or three months, or perhaps less, according to the species, signs of vegetabis life will bossen in the pots, but these will not be feros, but what are known as prothalli, which bear the organe necessary for fortilisation. The ferns will be developed after fertilisation has taken place.

Hoogka, 10th December. Six-The latter signed Wm. Davies makes general attack on Christianity absolutely uncompromising, and, if the writer will excuse me, equally andiscerning and indiscriminating in its nature. The evils and errors of Chris tianity, both as professed and as practised, are familiar even to the benighted denizens of Hongkong. Even if our early education had been radly neglected, as Mr. Davise aridently thinks, there are libraries in Hongkong, including a public one, so that we have not been altogether without the means of rectifying it.

But

I hope everyone is grateful to Mr. Davies for his well-meant efforts and for his con. scientions enumeration of stock arguments. Every little helps. The learned writer, how. ever, cannot expect to obtain a menopoly of our grateful feelings; other writers and thinkors havo-claims. One day at the Public Library, THE SHARE CERTIFICATE No. 2633

I think Mr. Davies must have the Offices of the DOUGLAS STEAMSHIP read that book (not because of the dirty finger- CO., LD Victoria, H ngkong, before 17h marks because, curiously orough, all the DECEMBER, 1903, a new certificate for the arguments so vehemently produced by him are said shares will be issued and the old certificate fuelled in that book. The old book, however, will thereafter be held by the Company as all not only produce thosesalf-smeargaments, but, anlik Mr. Davies, it rather sucessfully disposes of them, while at the same time it maintains throughout a calm and judicial attitude toward, all facts, which is also more than Mr. Daries It condamnas religious Intolerance. but it does not, like our frioul, immediately furnish its most glaring example. Could any. thing the more intolerant than the few hasty words with which Mr. Davies dismiss Chrie- tianity from his august presence? If Christianity is to be placed in the scales, let it be by men who are capable of weighing not only the cous but the pros. I do not think our friend has the qualities necessary for so great or responsible an undertaking. He writes in far ton petty a spirit, never for a moment appearing to realise the magnificance of the structars which he assails. I venture to think, with all respect to Mr. Davis, that beside it, as beside the silent Sphinx, even Mr. Davies' bulky form if he has one) looks slightly diminutivo,-Yours, etc.
